This CD is the soundtrack album to the 1977 television special which was aired only a couple of months after Elvis, the King of Rock and Roll, passed on.
Whilst Elvis was by no means the joke at this time that his detractors have often described him as being, it is clear from this album that he was nowhere near his best. Although there are good performances, such as two of my favourite Elvis songs HOW GREAT THOU ART and HURT, there are also some less good ones such as a painful performance of MY WAY, which he sometimes performed very well.
It is always nice to see that Elvis had a lot of humour left in him at this point, making a lot of jokes inbetween the songs.
It is a shame that RCA/BMG have not yet chosen to remaster this album or release it in better quality - there are a lot of comments from fans included on the set which don't really fit, and what I really think would work would be a straight recording of the show without these interruptions.
Whilst there are, as already mentioned, some good performances on this disc, I would not recommend it to someone who is new to Elvis as it is not him at his best. But for someone interested in his recording career as a whole it is an essential purchase - until the record company put out an upgraded version that is.
