Emeli Sande Live at the Royal Albert Hall

Ever since I saw her perform at the Olympics ceremony I have a big fan of Emeli Sande. She has an absolutely amazingly beautiful voice and is rare in that she can actually sing and is not one of these manufcatured artists who need to mime just to be any good. My husband recently bought this DVD from HMV. He had received some vouchers for Christmas and with HMV quickly going down the pan had to buy something before they would no longer accept his vouchers and this is what he got.

At first I wasn't sure I would like her in concert as although she has an amazing voice and I love the CD I wasn't sure if she would be huge enough to hold a whole concert on her own but I was wrong, she can definitely keep an audience entertained for an hour and a half. The first thing that strikes you about her is that she is really beautiful and just has an absolutely glowing face and a huge smile during the whole concert. She also has quite a nice posh accent too, something I wasn't aware of so I think its interesting to hear her voice. She actually does a really good job of getting the crowd involved in her music too. On some of the more popular songs she invites the audience to sing a line of the words and then the camera pans around the audience quite a bit showing them singing, gageing their reaction to the concert etc. I always find this part quite interesting, watching the people in the crowd. She gets quite a mix of people, from young to old and I think that is definitely her appeal, she appeals to a wide range of people. She also describes what some of the songs means to her too which I like as it gives you an idea of what the song means and makes the lyrics that more interesting and meaning when you know what they are about.

Basically the concert consists of Emeli sings all her hits from the album, Our Version of Events. She has four string instruments accompanying her, as well as guitar player, three backing singers, a drummer and a percussionist. She has a couple of outfit changes during the concert and I think my favourite is the final outfit she wears, a lovely red dress that she looks stunning in.

We have watched it a few times now and its a really good concert, makes us wish we had been there to see us too. My husband who is into music and knows about it noticed that she had put her drummer and her percussionist behind perspex panels and said this was so they were not too loud and did not drown out the sound of her voice. Apparently this means she knows exactly what makes her sound good and means she knows about music and how to project your voice and your sound.

She does an accoustic version of Abide with Me, probably the msot haunting hymn ever and sung like this in the huge Albert Hall with the lights dimmed and just her beautiful soulful voice is just amazing and actually brought a tear to my eye.

It gets a bit more upbeat nearer the end of the concert. At one point she is singing Read All About it and she introduces Professor Green who raps on the song and the crowd actually go quite wild. You can tell all the teenage girls in the audience were waiting for him and get really excited when they see him. I love the mix of his rapping and her voice, it makes for a really different song and its pretty cool!

The first song she sings when she comes back from her encore is the duet she sings with Labyrinth, Beneath Your Beautiful. I love that song and its really beautiful sung together with the both of them performing.

This DVD comes in a nice hardbound cover with the CD in the other side. The DVD has an approximate running time of 111 minutes and is definitely worth watching if you like Emeli.
