Advantages: Amazingly catchy tunes
Disadvantages: The knowledge that the next album will be rubbish
The Kaiser Chiefs are a five piece band from Leeds. This, their debut album, was released in 2005, and appealed to every person who enjoyed chanting lyrics at festivals.
I felt I had to write this review after my scathing review of their follow up album, "Yours Truly, Angry Mob" which was, in my opinion, horrific. However, this debut is everything an album by the Kaiser Chiefs should be.
EVERYDAY I LOVE YOU LESS AND LESS 8/10
"I know, I feel it in my bones
I'm sick, I'm tired of staying in control
Oh yes, I feel a rat upon a wheel
I've got to know what's not and what's real"
The opening song on the album is a fantastic upbeat number by the Kaisers. The song is brilliant and fantastic to dance to, with an amazing modern sound.
I PREDICT A RIOT 9/10
"Girls scrabble around with no clothes on
To borrow a pound for a condom
If it wasn't for chip fat, they'd be frozen
They're not very sensible"
There is a reason "I Predict A Riot" is the most successful song ever by the Kaisers. The song is both catchy and meaningful, with brilliant beats and a good rhythm, along with the brilliant sing - a - long lyrics.
MODERN WAY 8/10
"Take a lesson
From the ones who have been there
My brain is not damaged
But in need of some repair
Hold on to the basics
But we can change all our tactics
There's no point sitting going crazy on your own"
This song is another example of why the Kaiser Chiefs are a successful band. The song is catchy and impulsive, with a really strong sound to it.
NA NA NA NA NAA 7/10
"Ohh"
It does not move me,
Its not the kind of thing that I like"
Although the repetition of "Na na na" can be frustrating and at times annoying, it is what you expect from a song called "Na na na na naa" so you can't really complain, and between all the "na"ing is a really good sound.
YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL 6/10
"I tell you what it's going to feel like
You've lost a limb and you can feel it
It's too late, at night, not by my side
'Cos I'm not there to hold you too tight"
The song isn't one of the best on the album, but it still has a catchy tune and good strong lyrics. There is real passion behind the singing, and the riff is quite impressive.
OH MY GOD 8/10
"To much time spent dragging the past up
If I didn't see you not looking what I messed up
Settling down in your early twenties
Sucked more blood than a backstreet dentist"
Another one of the singles from the album, "Oh My God" is a fantastic tune which is once again catchy and fresh. The song was really overplayed in late 2005, but if that doesn't put you off then its a brilliant song to listen to.
BORN TO BE A DANCER 9/10
"Once you asked me what I'm thinking
'I lay back and think of England'
Do you know my real answer?
'I was born to be a dancer' "
Don't ask me why, but this is my favourite song on the album. The song has a brilliant rhythm and a fantastic sound. The song is really mint, and a good listen.
SATURDAY NIGHT 7/10
"Come in to the city on a Saturday night
Watching the boys on their motorbikes
I wanna be like those guys, I wanna wear my clothes tight
Matching jackets and a fistful of notes
New sneakers and a fresh pack of smokes "
Saturday night is one of the lesser known songs on the album, with a good rhythm and an amazing tune, though the lyrics at time let it down.
WHAT DID I EVER GIVE YOU 6/10
"what did i ever give you when you wanted me to,
all i gave you was pain and a look of disdain
what did i ever give you when you wanted me to,
all i gave you was grief are you sick to your teeth"
The album loses steam for a bit here, with the rhythm and catchiness becoming a bit repetitive. However, its still a good song and works well with Ricky Wilson's vocals.
TIME HONOURED TRADITION 7/10
"Well it's a time honoured tradition
To get enough nutrition
Stay alive until you die
And that is the end of you"
This is a good tune, but by this point the standardised style of the tunes is becoming a bit repetitive. The tune is good, but would have survived better if it was at the beginning of the album.
CAROLINE, YES 7/10
"you got everything so high oh high
did you have to take caroline?
i bet you thought that was the death of me
coz you are everything i wanna be"
This is a song for the enthusiasts. It is very catchy and sounds good, but is once again quite repetitive like the albums.
TEAM MATE 7/10
"We lost our friends because you wanted to
They had no faith in you I had faith in you
We did everything you wanted to
It was just me and you
On a bicycle for two"
The album finishes on a good song, but because of the lack of singles in the second half of the album only dedicated listeners (or those who are too lazy to turn over like myself) will have the privellege of listening to it. Its a shame because its a pretty decent tune.
This album is the epitome of why the Kaiser Chiefs were successful in the first cycle of their fame. The songs are joyful and fresh, with a unique sound and an amazing catchy sound. If you're into bands like The Fratellis, Franz Ferdinand, The Pigeon Detectives or Kasabian, you'll like this debut from the Kaisers.
Summary: Really good tunes by the leeds quintet.
