Advantages: upbeat punky pop
Disadvantages: samey in parts
The Kaiser are now pretty well known in the UK, but before the arrival of this album they were relative unknowns and were chancing their luck with punk fuelled guitar pop.
Who are they:
UK based group, fronted by chirpy singer/songwriter Ricky Hatton. They found fame off the back of 'I Predict A Riot.'
On this album:
It gets off to a great start with 'Everyday I Love Less And Less' which has some great synth work on it. It sounds retro, eighties and has an air of disco about it, though the bulk of the track has the guitar pop edge. They up the ante with the amazing 'I Predict A Riot' in which the bridge to the chorus tranposes and gets you hot under the collar. The energy in this song is brilliant and you can lose your inhibitions to it everytime.
Highlights:
'Oh My God' has an anthemic and stomping chorus and you can imagine this one causing a brawl in a bar. 'The Modern Way' is more subdued and has some biting and realistic lyrics. Hatton's vocals are more refined here and classier.
Overview:
The guys managed to carve themselves a nice little niche in the music market. Their ability to create radio friendly music with a punky edge was a smart move on their part, paving the way for the likes of Fratellis and similar alternative indie acts.
Verdict: Buy it
Summary: energetic
