      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Highly reccommended

David Garrett is an amazing violinist whose passion for music, from classical to metal, is very apparent in his beautiful albums. Although David Garrett has featured on many albums, 'Encore' is essentially the European follow-up to his earlier release, 'Virtuoso', which was released in 2007 (and which I also highly reccommend!)

These albums are not really standard classical albums, as they feature re-worked versions of classical classics, which David puts his own spin on, as well as his versions of rock songs, etc. This may not appeal to some people, which I can accept, however, this is what I love about this artist; I've heard all the songs many times before, and many artists have recorded the standard versions of them, and so it's fantastic to hear some new interpretations of some great songs, both classical and rock. It's great to hear a great artist being really creative. I particularly like his versions of rock songs and like hearing what he can do with them. I shouls also add that David of course has backing musicians, and so tracks include drums, guitars, etc, as required.

The track list for Encore is as follows, I'll try and do brief reviews of each song, but I don't really feel qualified to do so!

      1. Smooth Criminal - This is such a fantastic interpretation of Michael Jackson's classic; the opening riff sounds really ace on the violin. It's also really cool that he's included some Mozart on this track, managing to fuse Smooth Criminal with the Turkish March section of Mozart's A Major Violin Concerto. A great opening to the album.

      2. Who Wants To Live Forever - A beautiful cover of the Queen classic which has much emotion and is a nice comparison to the first track.

      3. Clair De Lune - A cover of Debussy's famous piece, this is one of my favourites on the album; I just love how it's so delicate and builds and grows - a great piece and this a great version of it.

      4. He's A Pirate - This cover of the theme from Pirates of the Caribbean is another of my favourites, just a great piece of music.

      5. Summertime - A cover of Gershwin's classic, which apparently took David Garrett to new territory in covering jazz, but he does it, like all the other covers, fantastically.

      6. Hungarian Dance No. 5 - I love this piece from Brahms, and this version is also great; a very lively cover which really captures the spirit of the piece.

      7. Chelsea Girl - This is one of Garrett's originals, and is a great piece, showing, like the original pieces featured on the earlier album 'Virtuoso' that he possess not only a great playing ability, but also a great writing ability, which of course makes his interpretations of other pieces so successful.

      8. Summer - From Vivaldi's Four Seasons, which is obviously a great piece, another favourite of mine, and I love hearing different artists playing this.

      9. Air - A cover of Bach's piece, which has been updated with an r n' b feel. Very nice and chilled out!

      10. Thunderstruck - Cover of the AC/DC classic, which is such a cool song, and this version doesn't do it any diservice; explosive and feel good, it really adds a great atmosphere towards the end of the album.

      11. New Day - Beautiful Empyr cover

      12. Ain't No Sunshine - Very nicely done Bill Withers cover

      13. Rock Prelude - Another original piece by David Garrett, this is a great rocky track, which shows amazing diversity in his own compositions.

      14. Winter Lullaby - Again, a fantastic origianl piece.

      15. Zorba's Dance - I love this piece and this is a great version of it.

Basically, this is a great album with great covers and great originals also. What I love most about this artist is that he is able to mix rock and classical music together so successfully, and therefore introducing rock songs like Nothing Else Matters, and classics like Vivaldi's Summer to whole new audiances in a unique and beautiful blend.

I definitly reccommend this CD to everyone, even if you don't like classical or rock music...or pop and r n' b, give it go.
