... bigger, better and certainly more impressive than this. I have always thought the Knight's vocals sounded like James from Starsailor at times, and on 'Long Distance', that is more apparent than normal. This is an excellent track, and one that should have really done well as a single release, although I am not convinced it is what the masses want, and I worry that the guys have missed their particular boat if they are wanting widespread mainstream success. The first time I heard this track it stuck in my hea...more

Crowned Review Ether Song - Turin Brakes: An album of two halves (2054 words)

I know very little about Turin Brakes, so in order to make this review a little more complete, I decided to do some research. In my mind's eye, I had the line up of this band very similar to the likes of Starsailor et al, so I was surprised to see that they are just a duo, who have grown up together since they attended the same primary school in South London. Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian are the men behind the sound of Turin Brakes. Knights provides the vocals, and Paridjanian, the mellow harmonies, and innovative music. They have spent the last two years touring on the back of their somewhat muted success. This is their second album, and after their first, The ...  Read the complete review

I won't go into huge detail about Turin Brakes in this review, as I exhausted my knowledge in my review of the Optimist. All you need to know is that I'm a huge fan and was really looking forward to this album. Those of you looking for more of the same might be disappointed, however those of you who appreciate a band that has progressed will find this a welcoming change - and they may even have picked up a few new fans. Singles released from this album include Long Distance, Pain Killer (Summer Rain) and Average Man. Released at time of writing was 5 Mile (these are the days) which is going to be released as part of a special edition album ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Ether Song - Turin Brakes: A new direction (528 words)

Chuck 'Ether Song' in your CD player, and the first thing you'll hear is an electronic drum loop, reminiscent of the eighties and sounding terribly un-acoustic. The next thing you'll hear is the shopkeeper desperately trying to explain that he didn't get the wrong CD and it really is Turin Brakes. Really, after their debut 'The Optimist LP', Turin Brakes (dubbed as part of the 'New Acoustic Movement' by lazy music press) were likely to recieve a shock from certain audience for anything plugged in. Yet with 'Ether Song', it seems this is the reaction they were hoping. As many fledgling bands are keen to do early on ...  Read the complete review
