I know very little about Turin Brakes, so in order to make this review a little more complete, I decided to do some research. In my mind's eye, I had the line up of this band very similar to the likes of Starsailor et al, so I was surprised to see that they are just a duo, who have grown up together since they attended the same primary school in South London. Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian are the men behind the sound of Turin Brakes. Knights provides the vocals, and Paridjanian, the mellow harmonies, and innovative music. I won't go into huge detail about Turin Brakes in this review, as I exhausted my knowledge in my review of the Optimist. All you need to know is that I'm a huge fan and was really looking forward to this album. Those of you looking for more of the same might be disappointed, however those of you who appreciate a band that has progressed will find this a welcoming change - and they may even have picked up a few new fans. Singles released from this album include Long Distance, Pain Killer (Summer Rain) and Average Man. Chuck 'Ether Song' in your CD player, and the first thing you'll hear is an electronic drum loop, reminiscent of the eighties and sounding terribly un-acoustic. The next thing you'll hear is the shopkeeper desperately trying to explain that he didn't get the wrong CD and it really is Turin Brakes. Really, after their debut 'The Optimist LP', Turin Brakes (dubbed as part of the 'New Acoustic Movement' by lazy music press) were likely to recieve a shock from certain audience for anything plugged in.
