Angel With A Lariat - K.D. Lang
by cswann - written on 31/08/00 (Very useful, 9 readings)
Rating:
Credited to 'kd Lang and The Reclines' this is lang's second album, and displays her 'alternative country' roots. It is produced by Dave Edmunds, though, so there is also a pop feel. "Turn me round" would be a good song for a cealidh (however you spell that!), in fact there are several rockabilly tunes like this - very 50s. It's towards the end of "Got the bull by its horns" that she does a brief Elvis Presley impersonation - soon after, she began to LOOK like him too, and everyone (including, famously, Madonna) was claiming that kd lang was the "female Elvis". Rating:
before kd Lang hit the big time she was producing excellant albums such as this where her 1st love of Nashville was mixed with the torch song stylings she perfected on Ingenue. In general, it's a return to the torch-song style of albums like "Shadowlands", with less of the country influence. The type of music that Julie London or Dusty Springfield used to perform so well. A good album to put on when you're in relaxed mood. The country background is still there, with steel guitar on but it's not the hoedown kind, more of a gentle Patsy Cline feel. "The ...

Experimental and atmospheric, but retains a pop sensibility.
The softer songs sound rather similar.

Retro ambience for Tangerine Dream fans.
Not up to the standards of its competitors, a disappointing change of direction.

Powerful Gothic Metal, Manson At His Best
None
Beyond The Dark - Ancara
Nice atmosphere and high production values.
Far too short, lacking in intensity and overly ballad-based.
Army Of Anyone - Army of Anyone
Reasonable enough modern rock.
Doesn't stand out.
Animal - Animosity
Competent technical death metal that doesn't show off.
Lacks individuality.

Talented old-school prog.
Confused intentions.

Mix of styles, as long as you're fond of organ rock.
Inconsistent.
A Diamond For Disease - Arsis
Title song is a brilliant long death metal piece.
Other half is essentially filler.
A Long March - As I Lay Dying
Previously rare material made available.
It's unrefined, unimpressive metalcore.
