Advantages: hmmm poppy

Disadvantages: tacky

There is something very satisfying about listening to this woman sing, maybe it is her bubbly personality shining through on the singles or perhaps it is her cute Liverpudlian charm. This is her debut album and there are many treats for pop fans.

Who is she

Sonia used to star in a sitcom called Bread before carving her own music career with the help of Stock Aitken and Waterman. She tried a comeback recently. The song failed to chart.

Highlights

The obvious choice here is the number one single 'You'll Never Stop Me From Loving You.' She might sound crazy, but the song is infact a rather joyous three minute pop explosion, in which Sonia bemoans her lover before then deciding that she likes him after all and will carry on loving him, despite his grotesque manly ways. The bubblegum catchy chorus is fun and playful and Sonia's vocals are wonderfully autotuned.

On a similar note, 'Counting Every Minute' is a godsend, a pop gem with well crafted verses and an equally bright and alert chorus section. If you liked Bananarama, this will come close. I was also counting every minute...until it ended.

'Listen To Your Heart' is another song that I return to when I want my faith in pop music restored. Sonia's message of trusting your instincts are clear, yet the lyrics play second fiddle to another fine dose of energetic pop music. This song, I believe was a single.

By the time you have crawled to the end of the album, the enthusiastic 'End Of The World' will close the chapter on what will have been a slightly sad and unfulfilled listening experience. But you must treat this album for what it is. Ten fine pop efforts with a bonus remix of 'You'll Never Stop Me'. Never as good as Kylie and not even up to the dizzy heights of Sinitta, Sonia is one of those priceless tacky pop tartlets you must listen to then not play again for another ten years.

Footnote

Cover artwork is hideous. Sonia looks like a wasp.

Summary: sufficiently dire fun
