Advantages: Classic Young without filler from his early years.

Disadvantages: Casual fans might prefer Decade or to cherrypick singles tracks.

After quitting Buffalo Springfield to go solo, Young released his self titled debut in January '69. Six months later, this, his second album, found him back with a band: Crazy horse, consisting of Danny Whitten on guitar, Ralph Molina on drums and Billy Talbot on bass.

They'd been together just three weeks when they recorded this brilliant LP. Young had frequently collaborated with superior musicians to Crazy Horse, but their great empathy and ability to lock into Young's groove really brought out the emotive quality in his playing and singing.

Some Neil Young classics are here, such as Cinnamon Girl and Cowgirl in the Sand. There are lesser known standouts too. The Losing End is a upbeat and ramshackle country romp with a hoe-down finish and Running Dry features perhaps the albums most powerful lyrics coupled with welcome violin work from guest player Bobby Notkoff.

The real grounding of the album is the two guitar epics, Down By The River, which closed out side one of the old LP, and Cowgirl In The Sand, these lengthy but beautiful pieces are a backdrop to both Young's intense guitar workouts and the peculiar depths of Young's voice.

As with vast majority of Young's back catalogue, this album is issued at mid-price, so you should be able to pick it for between £5 and £10 depending on where you shop, and is a real highlight from Young's early years.

Summary: A superb album, at mid-price too, why not 'Young out' and collect all his Reprise label output.
