Advantages: You

Disadvantages: This Guitar (Can't Keep From Crying)

Most post-Beatles solo albums leave a lot to be desired, but for every 'Tug of War' theres a 'Plastic Ono Band'. George Harrison 'the Quiet One' spent most of his time in the fab four as a bit of an add-on. Not really flourishing as a songwriter until The White Album, Abbey Road and Let it Be, so it just goes to show that the majority of his early solo work is of a very high standard.

My favourite albums by Harrison are his first double LP- 'All Things Must Pass' and his last, 'Brainwashed'. Extra Texture was his last album for the swindling Apple label, and is considered by many, including Harrison himself to be below-par.

The album's opener 'You' is an up tempo 'wall of sound' Spector-esque track thats instantly hummable. The second song is a fantastic slow rock song 'The Answer's at the End', similar to 'Beware of Darkness'.

'This Guitar (Can't Keep From Crying), a semi-sequel of sorts to 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' is almost eactly the same, which makes you wonder why he bothered. Its got a 70's funky sound to it - but is a bit of a throwaway. Ooh Baby (I Know That I love You) is also a shmaltzy luvvi-dubbie type of song, which again, is pretty forgettable, as is the next track 'World of Stone.'

'Can't Stop Thinking About You' is a schmaltzy song too, but is more likeable and catchy.

The thing about the album is, theres no real uptempo numbers apart from 'You' to get you inetersted, its a background album that you can imagine Gene Hunt having on whilst at a dinner party.

His Name is Legs (Ladies and Gentlemen) is the last song on the album and is OK, but no classic.

By '75 Harrison's popularity was on the wane, along with his voice and his sanity. Its a shame then, that not many people have heard some of his solo work, its actaully not bad. I probably wouldn't start with this album though - as there is an air of 'naffness' about it. The best track is 'You' by a long shot, which is obvious by Harrison as he returns to the track again halfway through the album with 'A Bit More of You'.

Get All Things Must Pass instead.

Summary: Yawn zzzzzz
