Advantages: great eclectic mis of style on a rock album
Disadvantages: None for me as I am a fan.
Ok here we have "pornogragraffiti" and not a naked woman in sight thankfully, don't be put off by the title as it hardly shapes the albums feeling.
This is Extremes second album originally released in 1990 and was the first album of theirs I bought. I have never regretted it since and gets a good airing from my collection even now especially when I feel the need for reminisce to my good old early years listening to rock.
As with their first album it consist of the same line up
Gary Cherone vocals
Nuno Bettencourt guitar
Pat Badger Bass
Paul Geary drums
The full album has a good old rock funk feel with a few ballads thrown in for good measure and really should have set the ball rolling for worldwide recognition that sadly only ever happened to a certain extent.
Ok on with the tracks
1. Decadence Dance- this has a real upbeat funky rock feel that always leads me into a girlie rock dance when I hear it, no doubt one of the only rock bands that gets me dancing. Pure listening pleasure.
2. Lil Jack Horny- a lovely melodic rock intro leading into another funky rock track with a great rhythm to it. Cherone's lyrics really do tell a story. Perhaps not one of my fave tracks but I still listen to it when I have the album playing as I don't mind hearing more of Cherone's sultry tones.
3. When I'm president- I just think this track works really well, funky rap esk rock if there is such a thing. Really tells you in a nice way what the think about the government of that time but without going way over the top. Plus easy to sing with some catchy Cherone lyrics too.
4. Get the funk out- This is one of my favourite all time extreme tracks. I can't help but dance to this track and no doubt look like a maniac in the process, this is a very eclectic mix of funk rock and horns all wrapped neatly into what is one of extremes really popular song,
5. More than words- this is an acoustic track only featuring Gary and Nuno. This is a track that made it into main stream music for a while. A great soft rock love song that makes their vocal range and harmonise stand out . I love the song and used to sing it to my kids when trying to get them to sleep at night. ( not sure if it made them fall asleep or they would perhaps pretend to be sleeping so mum would stop singing)
6.Money- a fast paced rock track that tells us how money obsessed our world is on a whole.
7. it's a monster- another upbeat rock track referring to the ever growing struggle of sexuality,
8.Pornograffiti- The title track from the album all about how we are consumed by images of sex throughout our lives. Yet again done in extremes unique rock funk style.
9. When I first kissed you-- this track really surprised me when I first heard it, has a real soul/ swing vibe that Gary's vocals style suits perfectly. A real love song that the likes Frank Sinatra would approve of.
10. Suzi- another Extreme classic styled track for me, Great vocals and guitars that leaves you in no doubt who you are listening too., as with some of their tracks not a favourite but can't say it is a track I would skip over either.
11. He-man woman hater- one of the best intros to a song I have heard nuno's guitar version of flight of the bumble bee. Really gives this an edge all of its own. I also love the almost sexist edge to this song that can almost make you feel angry but you do realise that that's not the message put across. Guys will get this song its about how men find it hard to understand women.
12. Song for love- A great rock ballad that gives me a lump in my throat and gets me feeling all emotional but in a good way. Gary's voice just gets me all goose pimples every time.
13. Hole hearted- an acoustic feeling track with funky country undertones. Again a track that shows of their vocal ability and harmonies.
I would certainly say if you hear the name Extreme and are left with a big question mark and my review has made you think about listening to any of the track search them out on you tube, you might find you like them.
For me personally another great album and really shows there progression for the first album and really gave me a great sense of anticipation for albums yet to come.
