the lostprophets looked to me to be another samey nu-metal band when i first heard of them, and at first listen i wasnt amazingly impressed by the whole thing. but thefakesoundofprogress is an album that grows on you. the whole sound of the band is heavy but with a melodical twist (i know, i know, a lot of people say that about the new wave of nu-metal bands, but this time it is true). one annoying thing about this album, though is that there is a totally pointless <introduction> and 4 <interludes> which are really annoying and consist of a man talking about <jimmy>, or some boring piano/guitar chords. this illusions the buyer into thinking that there are 16 tracks instead of the 11 proper songs. here is a run through of the proper songs on the album;

shinobivsdragonninja;
this is one of the first songs that i heard. it starts with a melodic <bass?> line, and then erupts into a harder guitar riff before calming down by the time that the music starts. this sounds really stupid for a nu-metal group, but at times the vocals harmonise with the guitar riffs.

thefakesoundofprogress;
this is title track as im sure you've already picked up. the music is made up of the same guitar riffs, and in this song i can also hear djs at work, and it doesnt make such a bad sound... at one point in this song the vocals and the riff blend together so perfectly... i cant explain it, youll have to listen to the song ;)

fiveisafopurletterword;
i suppose this is a standard LP song, its not the best and not the worst. it combines a shouty vocal, with an in tune vocal with the guitar, which makes an interesting combination.

andshetoldmetoleave;
the start to this song, i find quite boring and whiny and this carries on through the song, but there is a standard riff and slightly annying bassline, but the the song does pick up in the end and becomes passingly interesting.

kobrakai;
this was another song that i had th
e fortunateness of previewing before i owned the album. it starts with a funny highpitched <guitar?> and leads on to a wicked riff and huge shouty growly singing juxtaposed with normal <nice boy> singing with a great tune. the tune is memorable withut being poppy or happy, its luverly ;)

thehandsomelifeofswing;
the intro is really shouty and not very tuneful, but then the <oversinging> overpowers the shouting, and a decent tune comes through. this is one of my favourite songs on the album because i just love the tune.

<interlude#3>;
this is the only interlude that i actually like, and it combines a very soft guitar with soft singing, but the effect is good, and its the only interlude that i like.

athousandapologies;
the start is annoying and just sounds like a mess, but the end result is quite good and i like the tune.

forsure;
this another of my favourite songs on the album. its quite nostalgic, but its not heavy or soft, its somewhere in between.

awkward;
at first you think that this song is going to be a cheesy 80s soangly guitar thing, but its kewl. its at this point that the album seems to calm down a bit. i dont mean that there arent any neavy bits, just that it isnt as growly any more. i absolutely love the riff, its simple but effective.

odetosummer;
this as you can guess is a song about how great the summer holidays, and just brongs those images of summer days into your mind. its a really good song, well worth the wait until the end of the album.
