Advantages: Good lyrics, Keyboards adds well to the sound, Good chunky riffs
Disadvantages: vocals can get annoying
One Year ago, Lost Prophets were ignored by the press, unknown to most and had a small fanbase. One year later they've been front cover on metal magazines, huge fan base around the country and tipped to bring British metal back to Britain like the gold old days. Although this success revolves around their debut and only album to date..The Fake sound of progress. The album was released in 2000, to an unexpecting public, filled with beautiful vocals which could change straight away to screaming anger, hard chunky riffs and little extra bits that filled the album of which some you'd never notice. The album has however since been re-released and updated as some say 'to appeal to the Americans' although Lost Prophets claim, they just wanted to make better music...they certainly have done. The first sound you hear of the album is their first big hit, Shinobi vs DragonNinja instantly hits you with one of the most addictable riffs of the year you want to hear again and again, packed full of energy Shinobi vs DragonNinja may have the stupidest name of the century (made from 80's arcade game classics) but its one tune that'll stick into your head for a long time. Following up Shinobi.. the albums self titled recently released single thefakesoundofprogress which in all fairness is a letdown from the previous energy packed track, although the song itself is more cool and quiter it feels like it wants to break out loud at any time and its the wrong song to put after Shinobi Vs DragonNinja. Five is a four letter word, as well as having a funny title is just what Lost Prophets are about, The energy,, which pours out of this one again, as well as containing the little extras that the band throw in (keyboard bits). The song is followed by 'and she told me to leave' which drops the pace of the album a little and makes you think a bit, showing another side to the lost prophets that the self titled track couldn't get to
, the mellow side, which the song covers well. 'Kobrakai' then hits, and the result is jawdropping, a riff so good, its a classic as soon as you hear it, the drumming is perfect, and the vocals make the song sound damn near perfect, the song itself is split into 2 parts, in which when the first riff drops it comes back later on, after a complete change of mood in the song, the only words you can conclude of 'Kobrakai' are "Sheer brilliance". The Hardcore life of swing, A thousand apoligies, still laughing and for sure, don't stand out well from the album, but keep you entertained and listening never the less, but when 'Awkward' comes on your hooked to the lost prophets again, another prophets classic which compared to the previous tracks blow them away. Just when you thought its all over 'Ode to the summer' finishes the album off, a real heartwarming song that makes you think instead of want to jump about, a great ending to a great album. Listening to 'Thefakesoundofprogress' really does show you why the Welsh lads have been acclaimed as the saviours for British metal, 'thefake..' is a an album filled with so much classic moments, its unbelieveable its all in one album, however, the moments which aren't part of the classics, tend to just fill the album up, and the track listing should have been re-arranged instead of mixing the moods all over the album. Still though, this album is one that should help Lost Prophets on their global tour to win the world over, the only thing a stunned fan is wondering...what is coming next?
