Advantages: Mostly successful fusion of styles.
Disadvantages: Doesn't work on occasions.
Prodigy are probably one of the top two dance acts of the last ten years, alongside the Chemical Brothers. Their styles are pretty different though, Prodigy having a harder edge to most of their work, certainly in comparison to the Chemicals most recent stuff.
The Fat Of The Land is almost definitely their best album to date. It's predecessor was good, but doesn't have the consistency of this album. It's also far more varied, taking in influences from hip-hop, to dance, to punk and more. This approach doesn't always work, but more often than not, it's a unique success.
There have been few groups recently who've been able to fuse different genres together to effectively, while still churning out a great dance track as the result. Climbatize is perhaps the best example of this, an excellent instrumental with great rhythm that works even better with the bass up high.
It does have it's equal shortcomings though, like the track Serial Thrilla which never really gets off the ground. On another album, this would have been an acceptable component. But amongst this company it's failures are obvious. The mix of punk, rock and dance just don't work.
The most famous tracks are on here: Smack My Bitch Up, Firestarter and Breath. While those are the ones everyone will know, there are some other decent tracks in here, if you take the time to listen to it all. Give it a go, but keep in mind that their earlier work may be more to your taste if this is too "pop" for you.
