Advantages: Good Dance Style, Some Very Modern Tracks, Good Voice

Disadvantages: Some Weird Songs.

I have to admit I am not really a Kylie Minogue fan, actually I wasn’t but I am now. Firstly Kylie never ever appealed to me, I thought her music was just too disco but now that she has added that dance element to her music it has definitely appealed to me. I purchased her album myself after hearing several of her songs in a friend’s car.

For an artist who’s been around as long as Kylie it’s pretty tough to stay in with the latest sounds but somehow Kylie has continued to keep her sound fresh. After a period of time Kylie became very unpopular.

Personally I would not have been caught dead listening to a Kylie track three years ago but somehow she has managed to reinvent herself and become well cool again. The style of the album is quite different to her previous releases but made in a similar Kylie style.

Kylie has been a success in this country for absolutely ages and now she seems to be becoming a star in America too, her back side seems to be getting more coverage than her but that’s life!

Kylie is classed as pop music with a dance twist. That is exactly how I would describe this album; it’s more mainstream but has some very good dance elements shoved in there making it much more appealing and likeable. For some reason I wouldn’t really dream of purchasing Kylie music but from what I had heard this was one I had to listen to, and I am glad I did purchase it in the end.

My brother is quite a big fan of Miss Minogue and from what I had heard Light years was a pretty tough act to follow but I think she has succeeded in a pretty big way. Fever is made in a similar style but with probably more appealing elements such as the dance sound.

Kylie has tested out quite a few music styles but right now it’s the dance and pop kind of mixture. It’s working a treat for her but if she wants to continue to be successful she should probably try out other sounds too. She
should probably take some notes off the so called queen of pop Madonna.

Now personally I like Kylie better than Madonna, Madonna just irritates the hell out of me, Kylie seems much more grounded and plus her music is more fun. Even though Madonna changes her style of music often I think she isn’t as good as people make out. (Ok so who’s going to attack me for saying that?!)

~~THE TRACKS~~

This song really gives you a taste of what’s to come on the rest of the album. It’s definitely been 80’s inspired with a disco beat to it. This is definitely classed as a catchy disco tune as it has those poppy beats. The song is good and does grow on you after a period of time but still I think it wasn’t really the right choice for the opening track, its good an all but I still think there were some much more stronger songs which would have been more appropriate as the opening track. I like the beats on this song and Kylie’s style of singing is quite different compared her style on some of the other tracks. 7/10

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

I love this song as it has such an upbeat and summery vibe. I would think this is the more mainstream sound on the album and the obvious choice for her newest release. I think she sounds fantastic on this track and think it can put anyone into a good mood. This song reminds me of some of the more classic dance anthems out there as it seems to have been made in the same style with those catchy beats and bass line. It even starts off as a dance song and personally I don’t think it disappoints. I loved it the first time I heard it and I still do, it just always cheers me up and it just such a good song! This is my favourite song on the whole album, a lot of people would disagree with me but I think the whole vibe of the song is just so upbeat. 9/10

CAN’T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD

Definitely one of the most original
songs I have ever heard. It’s just infectious pop. The whole of Britain must have gone crazy for this song; Posh didn’t stand a chance for that number 1, no way! There is just something so original about this song; it’s just good to listen to. Those ‘LA LA LA’ repetitions do not get boring whatsoever! I love the vibe and beats to this song, its just so addictive, I can never get bored of it even though you’d think it would get really repetitive after a while. This is probably the most popular track on the whole album due to the fact that it’s making Miss Minogue a superstar stateside. I would expect this song to be the one to make her a star as it is just so damn original. I heard Sophie Ellis Bextor was offered this song first but nobody can work this classic like Kylie. I knew when I heard this song for the first time that it was going to be a huge hit for Kylie; I think most of Britain was saying that! 10/10

FEVER

The first time I heard this song was at my workplace and the fact they played the tape over and over and over again meant I had to here this song at least 20 times per shift. Anyway on to the song, personally I think it’s really catchy and has a very 70’s vibe about it. It’s got some excellent beats and think it makes an excellent title track. Everything about this song is just so retro and Kylie’s style of singing really backs up the beats and backing music. You might have to give it time for it to grow on you though as it’s not one of those instant favourites. I think Kylie sounds really good on this track and her voice goes really well with the backing music. The lyrics aren’t brilliant on this song but there bearable. 8/10

GIVE IT TO ME

I have no idea why but when I first heard this song it reminded me of Britney. I can’t say I’m very fond of this song due to the very poppy and weird sound effects which kind of resemble a
telephone ring tone. Personally I don’t think this track stands out at all, it sounds like a song steps would have released. This song did grow on me a bit but I still find it quite irritating, the way Kylie sings is kind of annoying as well, doesn’t really compliment the backing music and distorted beats. I think this song was probably mostly inspired by the 80’s dance movement as those electric beats sound quite outdated if you ask me. The tune of the song is quite good but the whole vibe is just annoying with those annoying beats. 4/10

FRAGILE

This song is much softer than some of the other songs on the album. It is a lot more chilled out and relaxing. It actually starts off on a more disco beat but as you get into the song you realise it is a lot more chilled out. I really love this song because it is so mellow yet it isn’t getting away from the whole disco vibe on the album. This song is really addictive, it’s a bit haunting the way Kylie sings in the background but that’s one of the best things about this song. The beats on the song are similar to the beats on some of the other songs on the album but the way Kylie sings is a lot different, instead of being shouty she is more chilled out and singer a lot more softly. This is one of my favourite songs off the album because its so lovely and relaxing, I can always sit back and chill to this song. 7/10

COME IN TO MY WORLD

The way this song starts out reminds me a lot of cant get you out of my head, has a very similar beat. The sound of this song is very modern and quite relaxing. The song is definitely one to chill out to. I didn’t really like this song to begin with but the more I listened to it the more it grew on me, I do think its one of those tracks that will just grow on you with time. I like the tune and I think Kylie’s voice sounds really good on this song. It’s quite a simple song with not many beats but that’
s the good thing about this song. 7/10

IN YOUR EYES

This song was Kylie’s second release off the album and I must say its ok. I wasn’t really a fan of it when she released it and I’m not really a fan of it now. I think it is a good song and Kylie sounds really good on it but it really depends on what kind of mood I’m, this song is more appropriate if your party kind of mood. I think this song will either grow on you in time or you won’t really be too keen on it. It has a really good beat to it but for some reason I just don’t like it as much as some of the other tracks on the album. 6/10

DANCEFLOOR

This song instantly has a very retro vibe to it. This is definitely more disco then anything else. I don’t know why but it kind of reminds me of Eurovision a bit, and no that isn’t a compliment. I think it’s far too disco for my liking, might grow on you after a while but this sadly is not one of my favourite songs. I think Kylie sounds quite good on the song but the backing music and retro beats just don’t really go well together. I don’t know why I just don’t think this album fits in on this album. 4/10

LOVE AFFAIR

This song is more up tempo with a kind of dance song vibe to it. It’s quite fast and Kylies distorted voice kind of makes it sound like a dance anthem. It’s an enjoyable song and definitely one for the dance floor. Its one of those songs you either instantly like or dislike. I think this song is likeable because of the dance elements in the song; I quite enjoy it because it is quite different to the other songs due to the more dance elements. 7/10

YOUR LOVE

This song has quite a dance music kind of vibe to it. It is quite a mellow song with a very dance feel to it. The backing music is quite reminiscent of past dance classics and has some very familiar beats in there but it all works out perfectly. This
song is very catchy with an addictive chorus. I really liked the way Kylie sings on this song because she is singing quite lightly and has a very mellow voice which goes perfect with the backing music and beats. Her style of singing really suits the whole vibe of the song. 6/10

BURNING UP

This song starts out with a guitar kind of sound but just breaks into a disco kind of track. When I first heard it I thought it was just a mellow guitar string kind of song but the chorus clashes with it in a big way but that isn’t really a bad thing. The verses are more guitar based whilst the chorus is a mad disco anthem! You’d think it wouldn’t work but some reason the verses and chorus fit perfectly. I think this song is rather addictive, I mean the first time I heard it I thought woah what is this, a mix of two music genres but they do happen to fit together perfectly. 7/10

~~OVERALL~~

For an artist who’s been around for as long as Kylie it’s pretty tough to stay in with the latest sound but somehow Kylie has continued to keep her sound fresh. After a period of time Kylie became quite sad and was definitely classed as unpopular.

I think this album was great; I was in no sense of the word a fan of Kylie’s so this album has converted me completely. It’s all fun, upbeat, catchy pop music. I just love the whole vibe on the album.

Now I would not have purchased this album but since I heard a few tracks and liked what I heard I purchased it and I’m glad I did because it really is a must for any pop music fan.

Excellent review. I've always been a bit of Kylie fan (child of the Neighbours generation, I suppose) so I really enjoyed this album. Thanks for a great op.

Actually, I'll agree with you on the Madonna thing! Although I can't claim to be a Kylie fan, either!
