Experimental and at times highly entertaining

Filmore East is a 1971 album with a concept idea of travelling with a rock band, the two main stories are "The Mud Shark" whereby the band are allowed to fish from their hotel rooms and catch a mud shark and much of the rest of the album which features an egotistical fictional rock band played by Zappa and Co. that is trying to pull some girls who are considered groupies.

Now I think it focuses on this latter topic a bit too much and that the best track on the whole album is most definitely "Bwana Dik" a crazy cheerful tune with operatic tendencies where Zappa informs the girls that he is well endowed. (the girls claimed earlier that they only sleep with band members who have had a big hit and have a "dick like a monster")

The album contains a lot of narrative sections which whilst quirky and containing humorous sentences are entertaining to listen to once or twice, don't really make a brilliant album. The amazing version of "Happy Together" (the hit song that they play to the groupies) is extremely well played, not surprisingly considering that Zappa's band had 3 members of The Turtles in by now. High operatic vocal sections are a bit over the top but towards the end there's quite a lot of funk - least not on the track "Lonesome Electric Turkey" as well as the awesome guitar playing on the well known Zappa hit "Peaches in Regalia", there's a hint of soul and disco to the album at the beginning which fits in to the time well.
