She could have been so much better (Finally Woken - Jem)

Advantages: Some amazing songs, i was addicted to listening

Disadvantages: Some bad songs, which got released!

After hearing Jem's first song, "they", i was instantly hooked on her unique sound and got her album as fast as i could. While her follow up singles did not do as well as her first song, which reached number 6 in the uk, I think they didn't do aswell because she released the worst songs on her album! Anyway, I'll now review each track:

1. They - The first song i heard of jem. Its about how we listen to "them", although we don't even know who "they" are. We often say "they say you shouldn't do that", but we just accept that, this song is about challenging the things you are told. A great song and i really enjoy the creepy kids singing in the background! 8/10

Favorite line: "Is it because it's true, that ignorance is bliss"


2. Come on closer - A great track which is actually quite dirty! I think she should of released this song as a single, but oh well. The music is great and her unique voice makes the song sound very unique. 7/10

One of many dirty lines: "Shut your eyes and think about what I'm about to do. Sit back relax I'll take my time this lovin's all for you"


3. Finally woken - Also the title of the album, this song is not one of the best in my opinion. The song i find is boring and not as deep as some of the other songs, and can be a bit corny - it can sound like a self help book! I still listen to it however. 4/10

A corny line: "this is the first day fo the rest of your life"

4. Save me - I'm not sure how i feel about this song, i don't skip it on the CD but it is a strange song. I think this song is about saving yourself, from yourself. Its an interesting song, a good one, but not one of the best on the album. 6/10

Favorite line: "Crazy thoughts have quick wings, gaining momentum fast"

5. 24 - My favorite song on the album and i think if she had released this she would be BIG. Its actually quite sinister, I think i read its about a man on death row (although i dont know if i agree with this), with 24 hours left to live. Its about his thoughts and the way he has lived his life, and how he would change it. Its very rocky and is quite a powerful tune! 10/10

Best line: "In 24 hours they'll be laying flowers on my life"

6. Missing you - This is also a great track on the album and you can tell its very personal. Its about her remembering somebody who has died. The song is very sad and it made me well up when i first heard it! 9/10

Example line: "I wish this could be a happy song"

7. Wish I - This was released, i think simply because it was the soundtrack to celebrity love island. Not really a fan and it shouldn't have been released. Ah well. 2/10.

"won't you come home, please come home"

8. Just a ride - Another song that was released, only reaching number 16. One of the worst songs on the album, Boring and not as deep as the others. 3/10

9. Falling for you - This is a great song and made me like her again after the past 2 tracks. Its quite rocky and about falling for someone who you don't want to, and know you shouldn't. 7/10

Favorite line: "But I'm scared to, let go, I'm scared coz my heart has been hurt so"

10. Stay now - A slow quite song, not really a fan. But winds down the album well. 5/10

"this love, this love is what living's for"

11. Flying high - The final track of the album, a nice end and its nice to fall asleep too. Not as much amazingness as the better songs on the album, but an ok song that has provided some easy listening, and the occasional shiver. 6/10

"But I'm flying so high, high off the ground"



All in all a great album with some turkeys dotted around that are easily skippable. I feel Jem could of been a lot bigger than what she was, all the poor songs were released. Her new album i do not reccommend. I was excited to hear it but it was awful. Sad times.
