      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Free was one of the great groups from the late 1960’s and early 1970’s with the sound of endless electric guitar melodies and some memorable tunes. Unfortunately a lot of their music has now been forgotten, but now and again I get out this old vinyl LP and enjoy their music again. The album ‘Fire and Water’ only has seven tracks on it so you can guess that some of them are fairly long. A lot of the tracks are very similar in sound with a pop rock feel to them. Most of the tracks are fairly slow and unfortunately they do now sound a little bit dated. The tracks are: * Fire and Water * Oh I Wept * Remember * Heavy Load * Mr Big * Don’t Say You Love Me * All Right Now When I bought this album (some 30 years ago) it really was one of the big sellers at that time, but now I am not sure if I would replace it if it got damaged. The quality of recording at that time was nowhere as good as today and at times when you are listening to it you do wish it could be ‘re-mixed’ and re-released. Of course the one really great track on this album is ‘All Right Now’. This had been a successful single hit for the group and the longer version on this album is excellent. Of course this tune is now best known as the backing music for the Wrigley’s Chewing Gum advert on television. Well, if it gets people to listen to the music of Free then that can’t be a bad thing. The other track that I really do like is ‘Heavy Load’, which has a haunting feeling to it with a great piano accompaniment and some very thoughtful lyrics. I probably only listen to the whole album two or three times a year, but when I do play it then I can guarantee that the track ‘All Right Now’ will be played many times and the ‘air guitar’ will certainly be around! This may not be the greatest album that has ever been released, but i
t does have a very typical 60’s/70’s feel to it and worth a listen to sometime if you enjoy music from that time.

For most people, probably the only track you would know of this brillant album is the classic "All Right Now". This song has been elevated into the Hall of Fame and deservedly so. Even then, the version on the album is the extended version with an extra bass solo from the bass playing genius, Andy Fraser. I must admit I bought the album (way back in 1970) purely on the strength of that one track but the whole album just blew me away. This is all true R&B, with a unique touch of Soul. Many of the tracks, such as "Heavy Load" are quite slow but oh so full of passion. "Fire and Water", the opening title track tells you immediately that this is going to be something very special. Not one track on the album disappoints. I really can't pick a favourite track, they re all so good. Remember, this album is now 30 years old. The quality of the recording is not up to today's standards. The quality of the music leaves much of today's efforts trailing in its wake.
