One dreary and drab winters afternoon I was sitting in my kitchen looking out onto a dark and dank
sky felling down and depressed and cursing to myself wondering how on earth I could make it through yet another grey season. I was flicking through the Guardian newspaper with it's usual mundane and unexciting articles when suddenly glancing at a page I read a music review on a Seattle based five-piece band and their newly released album.
The guardian quoted
'The dizzyingly uplifting four-part harmonies of songs such as Tiger Mountain Peasant Song are interspersed with profound darkness in the death-stalked Your Protector, or Oliver James, the chilling tale of a child's drowning. It all adds up to a landmark in American music, an instant classic.'
Finally a band which is commercially successful for all the right reasons, an extremely talented singer, poignant and poetic lyrics, rhythmic and pulsating beats, harmonious tones... the list is long.
Not since the good, the bad and the queen's debut album have I listened to a recent band that isn't famous for over hyped, slicked back gelled hair and one liner songs.. The fleet foxes music is full of evocative feelings: pain, anger, joy, sorrow, lust and depression. The album packs a strong punch wrestling with itself over it's own genius.
With hints of the Beach boys, Daniel Johnston and the Velvet Underground the Fleet foxes are full of flavours which do not disappoint and leave you feeling with 100% of satisfaction
He doesn't know why- One of if not my favourite song on the album, which highlights Robin Pecknold's beautiful voice that transcends me immediately into a trance like state of mind. With him bellowing 'there's nothing.....I can do....' at the top of his voice sends shivers down my spine- I am transported out of this world and into a fantasy land. It's a song that stirs up strong imagery of broken promises and torn relationships.
Your Protector- The first 20 seconds of this song made me cry for some time, it's a song for me which highlights the plight of humanistic loneliness portraying losing oneself and not believing in accepting
your own feelings. For me the lyrics are powerful and poetic, I feel his pain- The song has undertones of people losing their way and realising what they have lost but is too late to rectify the situation. Again Pecknold's voice combined this time with the archaic like quality of the flute is majestic and eerily poignant. I truly believe everyone should listen to this song at least once in their lifetime
Ragged Wood- When you listen to this song It makes you want to jump into a small vehicle and take a road trip across California or even Cornwall with the closest of friends and just have fun, sit round camp fires and giggle like children without any strenuous activities being completed.
White winter Hymnal- The trance like beats of this song are unique and extremely melodic- you can't help but imagine yourself in a church when listening to this song and look out onto one of Jesus' disciples singing for his life. Just Imagine an explosion of all the tastiest foods and tantalising flavours filling your mouth sending you into pure ecstasy for just short of three minutes, now imagine instead of your mouth it fills your ears and not with food but with sound. Well you don't have to imagine, just listen to this song.
I thought I would end this review by stating an important piece of information which is this album doesn't just have one, two or three great songs, the whole list is exceptional from start to finish which leaves you wanting more and more, as well as making you search the internet for cheap live tickets, autographs, band members used moustache combs...you get the point.. Now go and listen
Summary: Buy this album, the closest thing to perfection in a music record since the late Jimi Hendrix

- 02/02/09 They are a little beach boys-esque , I thought the same thing. I really can't think of a single song on this album I don't like. |
