Now I was not sure whether I would believe all the hype surrounding Fleet Foxes. They were getting so much media attention, it always makes me a little sceptical of whether I will like their music. Maybe it is the indie in me, always wanting to like a band before everyone else, who knows! Now when I decided to give them a try and get the album I was not left disappointed. At first listen, I was still not entirely swayed and this is definitely a grower of an album. But after a few initial listens, I really love the songs. For me it reminds me a bit (but only a bit) of Grandaddy.

"Ragged Wood" seems like their masterpiece but the rest of the album just holds that song up even more. The "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song" showcases some amazing songwriting finesse with a pleasant acoustic guitar backing Robin's sublime vocals.

Quiet Houses" demonstrates the way this group can harmonize their lovely vocals. There just seems to be a little of everything on this self-titled debut. The first couple of tracks definitely come across as folky, bordering on slow country, but the album evolves so much, I am already looking forward to the next installment.

The later tracks on the album are more classic rock, for example "White Winter Hymnal" is remarkably beautiful, building from a vocal round into glorious jangle pop with big, booming drums that lend a sense of adventure as the spine-tingling melody lightens some of the lyrics' darkness.

Throughout the album, the band sounds wise beyond its years, so it's not really that surprising that Fleet Foxes is such a satisfying, self-assured debut. My advice? Go have a listen (a few at least)

Summary: A big mixup of musical styles
