Advantages: Some decent tracks

Disadvantages: Too whiney

Fleet Foxes is the debut album of the same name band another album I had to check out on my Glastonbury album trail. Whilst it might be different to numerous contemporaries, I actually found it a bit limited and overrated when discovering its successes. There image seems to be a bit of a trendy folk hippy one with minimalistic videos and touchy feely lyrics. Occasionally the vocals are a bit high for me and sound like Neil Young impersonating a cat whilst sitting on the toilet after a particularly hot dish the night before. Overall it's quite a chilled out album but I like it when they eventually kick in with a bit of acoustic guitar.

I found it to be hit and miss with songs like "Sun Giant" being bland and just sounding like bearded hippies in the park through to "Mykonos" on Disc 2 which resembles a band that I like a lot - America.

White Winter Hymnal initially jarred me until my ears had fully tuned in but then I found it quite Brian Wilsonish and thought that the gentle lyrics suited it too. It was probably one of the better tracks, Tiger Mountain Peasant is another good one but unfortunately it goes on a bit too long for me, Quiet Horses has a lively start but then lacks bite as the vocals just float around in an average way.

It's not a breakthrough, at times it's quite annoying but there are some good tunes and if the band weren't so wishy washy, I think I may actually like them. It doesn't really deserve a 2 but a 3 would be too much as I can't really get on with at least half of the songs.

1 Sun It Rises
2 White Winter Hymnal
3 Ragged Wood
4 Tiger Mountain Peasant Song
5 Quiet Houses
6 He Doesn't Know Why
7 Heard Them Stirring
8 Your Protector
9 Meadowlarks
10 Blue Ridge Mountains
11 Oliver James

Summary: Hopefully they can improve on this album

I have got this playing as I write. I must admit I really LOVE this. I find it engaging, melodic and relaxing. I think it is a terrific debut album.
