Floodland manages to stand the test of time respectably well and is one of those unusual old 'gothic' albums to have a handful of highlights. Firstly the opening Dominion/Mother Russia is still as powerful as it was back in the day, and the superb eerie piano ballad 1959 is still one of my favourite pieces written by the band. These are two pieces I instantly look forward to when giving Floodland a spin! Undoubtedly the best track on the album is the ten minute top 10 single This Corrosion, which opens with a haunting choir before a high tempo and industrial burst with powerful vocals and visions. Emerging from the (sackcloth and) ashes from the funeral pyre of The Sisters Of Mercy following the departure of Craig Adams and then Wayne Hussey. Two years on and "Floodland" emerges from the most miserable and moody son of a bitch in the history of music (for it is he who thinks that he is God Almighty hates the term "goth" being used in the same room as the Sisters), Andrew "von" Eldrtich comes back to life with "Floodland", a mixture of anthems and, well to be blunt, utter crap. Released in 1987 to scores of hungry fans, 'Floodland' is undoubtably the Sisters of Mercy’s finest hour. Followed by the excellent, but rather un-Sisters-like 'Vision Thing', 'Floodland' was a landmark album in the 'goth' scene producing a string of hit singles and placing The Sisters of Mercy as one of the world’s top bands...despite Andrew Eldritch’s apparent shunning of such monickers.
