Advantages: great songs

Disadvantages: not that good a qaulity.

The title of the opinion i am writing is actually the name of the first release by Blink 182, back in 1993. The quality of the songs isn't very good but they are excellent, and i love every one of them. I am going to try and write, as best i can, a review on all the songs (although there is only six or seven), as fully as possible. I guess that i could try and put a bit of insight into the band around the time of this release.

The band at this time was :
Tom DeLonge - Guitar, vocals
Mark Hoppus - Bass, vocals
Scott Raynor - drums

At the time, Scott (who was two years younger then Tom And Mark) was a big Metallica fan, and wasn't fully into Punk like Tom and Mark were. That didn't stop the two finding him and asking him to join and help them. Not long before the release of this album / demo, the band played at their school. To put off the headmaster from finding out about what their music was about, they told him that theyir songs were anti-drug anthems, and they wanted to put across a message. They only played a short set before being thrown off the stage, never to play any school again! Not long after they played their debut gig at the local club, which was HUGELY successful, and which led to them making the Flyswatter LP.

Noww on to the tracks. They aren't in the right order.....i think! I can't quite remember the track listing, although i had it. all the songs i have on mp3.

Alone - This song starts off with about a minute of the bass playing the tune alone, then it stops...then the song starts up properly. The song is (i think) about being left alone after a break up, and not being bothered by concerned friends. My favourite song on the whole album. This is sung by Tom

Freak Scene - This has the sort of feel to it that makes you want to jump about. The guitar start out alone in a Hawaian sort of sound, then the bass kicks in, and the drums join. About half way throug hteh song, the gu
itar gos solo again. This is about (i think) Being a freak in school, not fitting in. This is sung by Mark.

Marlboro Man - This has a false start, then the symbol kicks in, being lightly tapped repeatedly. Then the bass adds, and the song sounds sort of Jazzy. Then the guitar takes lead, and the song sounds oh so punk. The lyrics are sung pretty fast in this one. This is sung by Tom, and is the longest song on the album.

Point of View - This is the only song on the album that is under 2 minutes. The guitar starts, then suddenly the bass and the drums kick in, and the vocals start. This is (i think) about not being able to put across your point of view to someone you love. This one is sung by Tom

Red Skies - The guitars and bass are played at the beginning of this one for before the drums join and the song kicks in, the vocals are pretty good on this one, and the song is pretty fun to mosh to (in your bedroom).
This one is sung by Tom again....

Reebok Commercial - This the sort of song that would fit in well on 'Dude Ranch'. the instruments are played for about a minute before the song goes slower and the vocals kick in. This is the second best song on the album. This is sung by Tom.

The Longest Line - Some of you may have heard this song before. That is because it is actually a NoFx song. Blink 182 redid it for the album, and i personally don't find this version much different.!!

Also while i am writing this, i am going to reveiw some rare tracks by Blink 182 (as if the Flyswatter album isn't rare enough!!).

I Won't Be Home For Christmas - This is an AMAZING song!! The song starts with the band singing in the background like carol singers. then the song kicks in. The guitars, bass and drums are accompanied by Tamberines of some sort, christmas bells and shaker of a sort. This is one of my all time favourite Blink 182 songs. The lyrics are sung by Mark, and the drummer is Sc
ott.

Dead Mans Curve - This is a somewhat freakish track. The bass doesn't play a big part in the song, but the guitar does. The song is about a drag race to dead mans curve where one of the cars crashes. The song is sung by Tom with backing vocals by Mark.

There you are, tell me what you think, and thanks for taking the time to read the opinion.

p.s : if you want the flyswatter lp on mp3, then read my Blink 182 in general opinion, and you can find out more there.

They only put out 30 copies of the demo, and you will never be able to find it again if Tom and Mark have their way. It seems strange that 3 ops have been written on this and it wasn't even properly released. I'm going to have to try and download this...

Hmm, not sure if they released it as such or if it was just a demo. Enjoy them live anyway, doubt they'll be playing these songs!
