... make for a rich fusion of sounds that sound nothing like anyone else. 1. One Trick Pony - This song shows Nelly singing about her independence and abilities. A strong start to the album. 2. Powerless (Say What You Want) - The first single from the album, Nelly sings about being proud of her heritage. A really good song. 3. Explode - This one's about growing up and being a teenager, I really like this one. 4. Try - Probably my favourite song on the album. A beautiful ballad. 5. Fresh Off The Boat - A funky so...more

Premium Review Folklore - Nelly Furtado: Nelly Furtado's folklore... (430 words)

I was eagerly awaiting the release of Nelly Furtado's second album Folklore, after enjoying her debut Whoa Nelly so much. When I got hold of it, I was very surprised - it was nothing like Whoa Nelly. If the former album is a soundtrack to a long hot summer, Folklore is definitely an autumn album. It's weird but I do find myself getting it out around September time and playing it solidly for a couple of months. Even the cover gets in on the act, with Nelly in a warm coat surrounded by rich red hues. The album itself is thoughtful and reflective, with Nelly singing about her experiences as a second-generation Portugese immigrant in Toronto, Canada. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Pretty powerless stuff (297 words)

Nelly's current sound has taken a more urban route of late, this album was her inbetween phase when it was a bit all over the place and seemed to be harking back to a folky kind of sound. Who is she: Canadian female vocalist who arrived on the UK scene in 2001 with the confusingly titled 'Im Like A Bird.' On this album: 'Powerless' is a mid tempo affair with a decent enough rhythm, but it lacks the oomph it needs to dance to. This means it doesn't come across as a strong radio hit nor a club buster, just a bit wishy washy and directionless. Her vocals are fine, the song fails to click ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Folklore - Nelly Furtado: Try. (656 words)

Nelly Furtado – Folklore. Having already purchased her first album, Whoa Nelly!, I was already aware of this girls talents. She mixes a great voice with excellent tunes and just a little bit of attitude. I bought this album after having heard the single Try on the radio. So, I’ll just go through it track by track…. One Trick Pony. A statement to her intentions that she isn’t going to be a one-off artist. This track has a lovely Spanish guitar riff, with Nelly’s fine vocals showing her determination. With violins, and various other strings kicking in with the constant drumming, this really is a very ...  Read the complete review

Awesome musician and a jolly feel Similar sound throughout

The Enchanted Hill - Album Leaf, The
More pleasant post-rock soundscapes. Becomes fairly dull and repetitive, and lacks in emotion.

Tales Of Mystery And Imagination - The Alan Parsons Project
A varied and well-produced concept album. Fails to capture the spirit of Poe's works.

Navajo Joe - Ennio Morricone - Soundtrack
An infectuously wild and fun spaghetti western from the pen of the maestro Slightly repetitive, but not to any great detriment

Fantasmagorie - Akurat
Fun and skilfully executed modern ska tunes. Indecipherable lyrics (for non-Poles) and less imaginative reggae sections.

Sibongile - Mafikizolo
Great mix of musical styles with something to suit everybody Several songs are a bit repetitive

Dust And Glass - Farfield
Beguiling and subtle electronica for the descerning ear Some might not like the lack of 'danciness'
