Advantages: A number of excellent nu-metal anthems are featured here.
Disadvantages: The band here began to move away from the genre of nu-metal.
'Follow The Leader' is the third studio album from Korn, it was released in 1998 and saw the band edge slightly away from the genre of nu-metal. There's still quite a nu-metal sound present here for the most part, a definite hip-hop influence; this was the first album with which the band signalled its intentions to move away from the genre though, only slightly but by enough to let you know that with the next album the nu-metal sound would probably be no more. The album consists of a stonking great 25 tracks, the problem here however is that the first twelve are silent so what you actually get here is thirteen tracks (and a hidden bonus track also).
After covering an Ice Cube track on second album 'Life Is Peachy', the band actually got the man himself involved here and collaborate with him on the track 'Children of the Korn'. It's a pretty decent piece of music, it's actually one of the three collaborations included here and the other two involve Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit, and Tre Hardson formerly of the hip-hop group The Pharcyde. All of these tracks work extremely well, it's interesting to hear others involved here aside from the five members of Korn.
Instrumentally the music of Korn here always has much to offer, the guitar sound is extremely well put across by the bands members Munky (James Shaffer) and Head (Brian Welch) and the drumbeats also are exceptionally well crafted. Vocally the performance of Jonathan Davis is absolutely exceptional here; every element of the bands sound is strong and always the music of Korn is absolutely brilliant throughout this 'Follow The Leader' album.
Such tracks as 'Freak on a Leash' and 'B.B.K.' really showcase the bands sound most strongly here, these are both exceptionally well crafted tracks from Korn and the absolute highlights of this fine album in my humble opinion. These are not the best tracks that the band has ever written, they are however still strong pieces of music in the genre of nu-metal and if this is a genre that you're fond of then I'd most definitely recommend listening to these excellent tracks from the band.
Definitely give this 'Follow The Leader' album a listen, debut album 'Korn' is the bands best I feel but this release certainly comes a close second. Find this album for cheaper than a fiver and definitely consider parting with your hard earned cash; I paid around £4 for this album some years ago and was more than happy with the investment that I made. 'Follow The Leader' is not an album that I play a lot, I do however drag it out from time to time and give it a listen as there are a number of fine tracks included here and the album never fails to make me smile.
Summary: 'Follow The Leader' is a Korn album which is well worth listening to.

- 30/06/08 This was always my worst Korn album by far (but then again, I never heard anything after the fourth album). |
