Classic Nineties Evocation of Sixties Pop

When I think of Saint Ettienne, this album sums it up, it could almost be the soundtrack to the swinging sixties film 'Blow Up', this is an awesome album full of groovy sixties tunes with the airy vocals of the lovely Sarah Cracknell adding an element of sexiness to the effortless cool.

This is a fine collaboration of the talents of Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs who along with vocallist Sarah Cracknell created a fine pastiche of a previous time.

Cracknell has a beautiful voice which really gets into your head, its smooth and sexy and very English and it is perfectly suited to this style of musical arrangement.

The album is cool, suave and a bit conceited, it is beautifully arranged with organs, strings and beautiful choruses.

Stand out tracks include the gorgeous "Spring" which sounds like any number of classic sixties tunes, it has elements of Bacharach to it. Another standout is Nothings going to stop us, which was dancey and cool and really did well on the nineties dance scene.

The album is full of cool tracks from the cover of Neil Young's 'Only Love can break your heart' to the stringy "She's the One".

The album is well worth a buy at £1.91 and is much cheaper on ebay or Amazon Marketplace.

The album is a really interesting and eclectic mix of dance music and swinging sixties themes, its like a grand mix of John Barry and the Chemical Brothers.

"Wilson" is wonderfully eloquent and reminds me of the beach boys, whilst tracks like "Stoned to say the Least" is reminiscent of trancier bands like Orbital.

This is a cool album which has a nice mix of elements musically, it still sounds relevant today and the album cover is so cool it hurts.

Saint Ettienne are a band who had some good ideas and some great samples and production. This is really worth a listen.
