When I first began to like Genesis music the group were a trio and quirky Phil Collins was on vocals performing wacky songs with 'Spitting Image' style videos and laugh-a-minute pop tracks that had video guest appearances by Benny Hill. I worked my way backwards through the group's history and when I discovered that Genesis once had another lead singer, Peter Gabriel, I was quite surprised. I'd been aware of Gabriel's ultra-creative and flambouyant solo style and couldn't associate him with the sort of music that the Genesis I knew were producing. Genesis must have been reasonably happy with the way their career was going in 1972 when they came to record this, their 4th studio album. Their previous album had moved them into the top 30 for the first time, and their incessant touring, outrageous stageshow (Peter Gabriel, the lead singer, had developed all manner of bizarre costumes and even stranger hairstyles) and frequent appearances together with other bands such as Lindisfarne and Van-der-Graaf Generator had built them up a sizeable following.
