Morcheeba's newest album seems to be a willful attempt to drop the band's trip hop tag. This album is even more brazenly pop-oriented than the previous effort of 'Big Calm'. It expands on that album's eclectic genre mixing and pop music polish, 'Fragments' places even more emphasis on crafting gorgeous pop songs with an ear towards the slightly unusual. Morcheeba combines pop songwriting with an affinity for the upbeat horn arrangements of classic soul labels, and a love of soundtracks and twisted synth noises. The track 'Rome Wasn't Built in a Day' merges vocalist Skye's confident, soaring voice with triumphant horns and an upbeat rhythm. The production, while polished, maintains some of the rough edges of the band's previous efforts. Many of the songs showcase Morcheeba's affection for old school hip-hop rhythms and scratching, as shown by the two tracks featuring rappers Mr. Complex and Biz Markie. Markie's cameo on 'In the Hands of the Gods' is a highlight, featuring his trademark human beatbox over a lazy funk groove. 'FRAGMENTS OF FREEDOM' is Morcheeba's most accessible album to date. Buy it!
Morcheeba are one of my favourite bands around at the moment. Their albums are full of catchy tunes, chilled out melodies and wonderful singing. Fragments of Freedom is their latest offering. If you like Big Calm then this CD is certainly worth its cover price. For your money you get 12 tracks, and the "special edition" that I have also has a Cd rom short film - "the making of fragements of freedom". I haven't checked the Cd rom out yet, but for an added freebie it has to be worth looking out for. I also got a large postcard/print of the album art work. The songs are as varied in style as is usual for Morcheeba. Many of them are instantaneous favourites; "World looking in" "Rome wasn't built in a day" and "good girl down" spring to mind. You won't be taking a chance on this album, if you like even one Morcheeba song. Buy it. Love it.
This is a great album. If you liked Big Calm then you will have a very hard time not liking this one. The music is of a very similar theme and there are some amazing tracks on this album. This music is great to put on and lie back and relax. You can let Morcheebas musci wash over you and it is definitely classed as chill out music. There is a nice variety of track on this album but they all seem to progress very nicely form one to another. Morcheeba have gone from strength to strength with this release. I am not saying it is their best to date but it may well be. Very enjoyable relaxing music.
