The Mars Volta, recently (dubiously) described as "The Best Progressive Rock Band in the World" are, what I would affectionately call, a "sonic assault". If you musically "faint of heart" then do avoid this record. Avoid the band as well. Too much too soon can be bad for the health. Describing their sound to various friends, I frequently use words like: eclectic, jazz-rock-fusion, blistering, musical and bizarre. Try and imagine listening to a standard rock band, except with a virtuoso guitarist playing unspeakable modes across the top of some seriously funked up drum and bass grooves. The track "Carrickfergus" Great songwriting Songs about being the 'Last Bandit' sound funny in the (Wild) West Midlands Improved technology and focus over previous release. Still feels insubstantial. Incredible artistry, several career highlights. 'One Foot Wrong'.The Red In The Sky Is Ours - At The Gates
Classic experimental death metal album, and At the Gates' best. Some progressive touches aren't as well incorporated as they would like to be.

Perfection of the band's style, with great guitars and vocals and some timeless classics. Songs tend towards over-repetition, and end of the album is less noticeable.
