Advantages: It's Elvis singing

Disadvantages: Many of the songs are poor

During the 1960s Elvis Presley made a great many formulaic films which thwarted his ambition to be a serious actor. This CD features music from two of the films from this period, both of which are light and frothy examples of his films.

FRANKIE AND JOHNNY was set in the 1900s (which does seem a little strange as none of his other films were set in a historical period other than that in which it was made) and featured some pretty poor music, including trite songs such as PETUNIA THE GARDENER'S DAUGHTER and CHESAY. With material like this it is little wonder that Elvis was embarrassed of his films from this era. PARADISE HAWAIIAN STYLE is only a little better, but probably really only because I have a soft spot for QUEENIE WAHINE'S PAPAYA which is a fun song, although it is really a throwaway number. Songs such as DATIN' and A DOG'S LIFE are on a par with the poor ones from the previous movie.

I can't really recommend this CD unless you are a completist who feels the need to own every song that Elvis ever recorded (like me!).
