      Advantages

      Disadvantages

60's recordings by the main man still sparkle half a century later

** From Nashville To Memphis: The Essential 1960's Masters Vol.1 - Elvis Presley **

It wasn't too cool among my school friends to like Elvis in the late 80's. Then again I didn't care much for most of their music either. Little of it stood the test of time -not so Elvis.

My parents are big Elvis fans and that got passed on it to me so I am always pleased whrn I find an album or box set that was previously unknown to me.

I found From Nashville To Memphis: The Essential 1960's Masters Vol.1 - Elvis Presley on Amazon for £35.99 and thought it would make a good joint present for my parents to compliment their vinyl LP collection.

      ** The music **

There are 130 songs spread over 5 CD's so I am spoiled for choice when it comes to tracks to highlight. There are so many of Elvis' post army days 60's tracks here.

      I especially recommend -

Stuck On You with it's underlying boogie feel and catch melody

Suspicion with it's infectious guitar riff and change to half tempo in the middle and back to full speed. There is also a great build up ending.

Devil In Disguise with it's softly sung melody that increases in intensity in the choruses.

Big Boss Man which shows that despite what negative people have set Elvis did not lose his edge after the 1950's. This song along with many others in this box set prove that.

I could go on all day picking out great tracks. The more I listen and the more I check the track list the more other tracks I love stick in my head. But I would be here all day if they reviewed them all. Suffice to say this is some fine, fine music.

      ** My verdict **

For £35.99 From Nashville To Memphis: The Essential 1960's Masters Vol.1 is a bargain. It is as good for fans who don't already have all the tracks on CD as it is for those just discovering the King.

The only negative here is that Elvis isn't still with us to make more great music!

Thank you for reading this review,
      Mike x

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      These truly are essential

FROM NASHVILLE TO MEMPHIS provides material from Elvis Presley's recording sessions in both of those cities made between 1960 and 1969. The previous release, THE KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL was a 5 disc set with the 'complete' masters from the 1950s - this one is subtitled the 'essential' masters Vol. 1 - this is because Elvis recorded a lot more material during this period, and so some selections had to be made. One of the surprises is that none of the music from his 1960s films appears in this set - these were saved the Vol. 2, called COMMAND PERFORMANCES.

The joy of this set is realising that despite the general belief that Elvis made no good music in the 1960s, giving all of his time over to rubbish movie music, this is blatantly untrue, and this set proves it. From the opening track MAKE ME KNOW IT the listener is provided with a fun listen where Elvis is clearly enjoying himself, and although this enjoyment didn't last throughout this period (particularly regarding the aforementioned movie music), much of the music on this set is filled with it. It is definitely a recommended purchase.

Other great songs on this set include Long Black Limousine, This Is The Story, Wearin' That Loved On Look, You'll Think Of Me, A Little Bit Of Green, Gentle On My Mind, I'm Movin' On, Don't Cry Daddy, and Inherit The Wind - many not particularly well-known to non-Elvis fans, but fantastic songs nonetheless.
