Advantages: Killer music, awesome lyrics, IT'S ACTUAL OLD FASHIONED HARD ROCK!!!
Disadvantages: songs are a little short, would like a few more heavy tracks
An opinion on Full Devil Jacket by Full Devil Jacket. I traded in my Filter (too tame), Disturbed (he sounds like a seal on acid) and some other cd (that was so bad that I can't even remember it's name) for Full Devil Jacket. I had run across them on CDNow and figured they were worth a try. It more than compensated for my 3 cd sacrifice. The first thing you notice on the the heavy first track, "Wanna be a Martyr?", is that these guys are loud. Not the most intense thing, but definitely heavy enough for a hard rocker's tastes. The vocals (Josh Brown) kick in, and I'm hooked by the first verse--"If I am changing, maybe I'm growing, into a version of the sewer Christ picture show." There's awesome religious imagery throughout the disk. Josh Brown can MAKE a statement when he wants to. What do I love about this album? First of all, he doesn't cuss every other word (or at all, for that matter). Don't get me wrong, I love Slipknot, but it's refreshing to hear a message besides "F--- you!" Josh Brown uses instead powerful imagery to get his message across. For example, in Fastblack, Brown sings, "The dark horse eats God's lonely flock." Later, in Monster, he croons, "Razorblades on my skin and / hearts filled with mace / and paper for my face." The man is a lyrical genius. I love what he says, and how he says it. What I absolutely adore about this album is its variety. You'll hear heavy thunder-storm tracks and mid-tempo touching songs. Content-wise, you'll hear songs about disillusionment, aggressive love, passive love, depression, complacency, and...maggots. Yes, maggots: "Mr. Wiggly" is an absolutely warped little song that doesn't fit in at all with the rest of the album. It's the heaviest track, and it's either hilarious or profound, depending on how deep you interpret it. I must recite the chorus, "Tasty, tas
ty, tasty, tasty / Oh my God you're tasty / Eat'em up eat'em up eat'em up, Go!" Sick, twisted, funny, AWESOME. My personal favorite song is "Monster". It's one of the slower songs on the album, but the lyrics and music blend to create a true feeling of loss. The chorus: "You made a monster out of me / Doubt-fed emotion / colored gray." It's really beautiful. Brown sings most of the album, but occasionally slips into screaming. It all sounds great anyway. There are more mid-tempo songs than heavy slammers, so be prepared. I do enjoy all of the songs, though "Love song" is a little weak. If you're looking for impressive hard rock, this album is for you. It's a fantastic representation of what its genre SHOULD be. Go now, hard rock fan, buy it and bow to it! Quick sidenote: the booklet artwork is awesome!!!

Trayo - 01/09/01 Not my kind of music at all, but a very good op all the same - good enough for me to read it all without wishing I wasn't, if you know what I mean! |
