Advantages: Apex 'Virtuoso' (Airheadz Remix), Fire & Ice 'Lost Emotions', Beam & Yanou 'The Free Fall (The Opus)'

Disadvantages: Geof Lawz Project 'Dr King's Dream', Blaze 'My Beat', Fatboy Slim 'Star 69' (Xpress 2 Wine Em Dine Em & 69 Em Supamix)

After two dissapointing albums in the shape of Global Sound System and the (appaling) National Anthems, we have the best Gatecrasher album for a year at least.

CD1 opens well with a Hybrid mix of oldie Papua New Guinea, and some good but slightly forgettable tunes up to track 10, Innocente by Delerium, DJ Tiesto remix. This is inevitably not in the same league as his remix of Silence, but congratulations to Gatecrasher for putting it on their album so early. A few more songs and we come to the best part of the abum. I Will Be With You by Ursula's World, John Johnson Remix rips of Tiesto' s Silence slightly, but is nice all the same. Then, the best track of the album, Virtuoso by Apex (Airheadz Remix). This is likely to become the next Airwave or 4 Strings if it gets the exposure it deserves. Then a rather nice tune by David Forbes, Questions Must Be Asked (Kayestone's Recon Remix), and another future classic: The Free Fall (The Opus) by Beam & Yanou. CD1 ends rather poorly with an average offering from Joshua Ryan and someone else.

CD2 is equal to, if not better than CD1. From the start we have nice tunes from well respected producers. Things pick up though with Moonshine by Planisphere, into the massive Stringer by Riva. Two tracks on is Lost It.com's Animal that should be big on Perfecto and then the best of CD2: Fire & Ice's Lost Emotions. Think Chakra's Love Shines Through crossed with Three N One's Original Mix of Cafe Del Mar by Energy 52 and you have it. Then a nice remix by Airscape (uncredited) of Release Me by Factor 9, inexplicably into the dire Dr King's Dream by Geof Lawz Project, and Sunrise (Here I Am) by Ratty. From then on there's no tat: Folie A Deux by SHOKK, Warrior's nice new one Voodoo and a nice tune to end with, Klang by PGL.

If you want quality up to date tunes, go for this album. But don't be fooled into thinking this is the best Gatecrasher has to offer.
For classic trance, look at some of the others first. Here's how I rank Gatecrasher Discotech Generation compared with the others (top = best)

Gatecrasher Wet
Gatecrasher Disco-Tech
Gatecrasher Red
Gatecrahser Discotech Generation
Gatecrasher Black
Gatecrasher Global Sound System
Gatecrasher National Anthems

Not being really in to dance, the track listing's largely unfamiliar. Fatboy Slim is as bad as Moby or Fragma, and I'm wary of DJ Triesto bastardising more fine Delerium stuff. I'd like to know a bit more about what this music is like (and what happened to BT and apollo440?) Still a good op though. Ben

I must say that the tracklisting looks like GC may be back to their best - no bleedin' Fragma or Moby, but proper, deeper, darker trance. Fabulous.
