      great trance

Say Gatecrasher to anyone who is serious about clubbing and you will get gasps and breaths of euphoric pleasure. That is essentially what Gatecrasher is all about. Uplifting trance music, for the glowstick generation. There are three discs here and 49 tracks, collecting some of the biggest trance anthems from 1993 through to 2009.

I recommend 'Love Stimulation' by Humate, which is a trippy, vivid synth workout, which seems to take you on a journey to far off lands. Not necessarily that dynamic, but the melody is involving and enchanting enough to keep the attention levels up. Armin's 'Communication' is one heck of a wicked trancer, with a breakdown to end all breakdowns, just when you think it is going to go back into the beats, it drops another mini build, keeping you teetering on the point of explosion, before it lets rip with one almighty riff which will push your senses into overdrive.

Binary Finary's amazing 1998 is another superb synth fest, with chords which lift and lift until they verge on collapsing. Tiesto's 'Traffic' is dark, submissive and seems to be calling you into a dark room, like some evil pied piper. A simple yet effective synth stab plays over and over, building demonically until it resonates so badly you can handle it no more.

William Orbit tries his hand at rejigging Barber's 'Adagio For Strings,' which is handled very well, thanks to a super remix from Ferry Corsten. The merging of classic and trance is a winner and the result quite majestic.

Hitting the second disc, check out Chakra's powerful yet warming vocals on 'Home' before exploring Push's 'Strange World.' Push manages to create an icy cool melody which verges on the progressive, while still keeping you nodding along.

Veracocha's 'Carte Blanche' is a belter, with one of the strongest dutch trance riffs to have hit dance music in the last twenty years and a brilliant piano breakdown. Genuis. Next check out Oakenfold's delicious 'Southern Sun' which paints a picture of August nights, sitting on Ibizan beaches with a sangria at hand, sublime and romantic.

As we hit the last disc, my final picks include Wippenberg's 'Chakalata', which is more progressive trance than the stuff on the previous two discs. A delighful melody which takes a while to peak before grabbing you by the nose and refusing to let go. Arnej's 'Dust In The Wind' is not so aggressive, but a mellow piece of music which allows some breathing space, a moment of reflection, as a vivid melody flows over you. Then we get another dose of Armin as he delivers the moody 'Rain' which comes to life thanks to a gripping vocal turn from Cathy Burton.

Also be sure to check out Art Of Trance, which sounds like it should be the soundtrack for Greece Uncovered or a programme of that ilk, a keen melody which gets more agile as it develops and a thunderous basshook.

There is a comprehensive collection of tracks here and something to please trance fans. Recommended.
