Clubbers Guide 2009

Premium Review Im in the mood for dancing (337 words)
by benlepensive - written on 06/08/09 (Very useful, 28 readings)
Rating:

I like my dance music, so I am always anxious to see what tracks are selected for dance compilations. This is supposedly a guide for clubbers, to lead them on their journey through dance music for this year. Kid Cudi's 'Day And Night' is the song to start things off, a garage beat and some chilled vocals sit well with a grimey bassline. It was a big hit and has a good groove, but it very repetitious. The Outsiders turn in a good version of an old Beverley Knight song, adding some dancefloor edge, polished off by the Freemasons in their usual classy way. I dip into Guru Josh if I want to get in the mood for a night out, with that amazing sax riff belting out over Klaas' ...

Tuff Jam Pts Underground Frequencies - 1

Premium Review Tuff Jam Hits The Mainstream (1019 words)
by danball - written on 21/05/09 (Very useful, 56 readings)
Rating:

'Tuff Jam' was a DJ/production/remixing duo consisting of Karl 'Tuff Enuff' Brown and Matt 'Jam' Lamont. They worked relentlessly from the mid-nineties until around 2002, when the guy parted ways and began working on other projects. They are responsible for some of the biggest anthems in the UK Garage scene, in fact, I would recommend you do a quick search for their work on the world wide web as they did have some commercial success and so there may be something that they have done that you know! The UK Garage scene was reaching it's most popular in 1997 and so 'Underground Frequencies Volume 1 was released. A double CD (one mixed, one unmixed) was compiled by Karl and Matt ...

Best Gay Pride & CSD Anthems

Premium Review So Very Gay (354 words)
by benlepensive - written on 03/09/09 (Very useful, 18 readings)
Rating:

This is one of those albums that will lift your spirits and have you raising your hands aloft, celebrating all that is good about life. There are 36 tracks in total spread over two discs. The CD claims it is all about Gay Pride, so let's see if it lives up to the title. The opening song is rather in your face. 'Free, Gay and Happy' is all very positive and vibrant, but the tacky factor is slightly overwhelming and you might not want to play this one more than once, unless you want to start being all preachy about your lifestyle. Stalwart Gloria Gaynor adds some soul and disco depth with 'Oh What A Life' which offers up some more feel good vibes. Her vocal sounds fresh ...

Twin Peaks - Angelo Badalamenti - Soundtrack
Badalamenti and Cruise work beautifully together. Themes become repetitive as they follow a limited number of predefined paths.

Systematic Chaos - Dream Theater
Few Highlights Few Highlights

Spreading The Disease - Anthrax
Great vocals and guitars, when used effectively. Over-repetitive and lacking in intensity.

Star Trek V - Soundtrack
Goldsmith's best Trek besides the original with lots of thematic grandeur Rather too much usage of the downbeat Adversity theme which is not terribly interesting

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country - Cliff Eidelman - Soundtrack
Fantastically dark Star Trek score unlike any other The almost all-encompassing darkness and suspense may not be ideal for a lot of people

Star Trek: Generations - Soundtrack
Is a decent effort Is not an enthralling effort

Octavarium - Dream Theater
The song 'Octavarium' is brilliant Again, may bore some people

Korngold - The Sea Hawk / Deception
Two premiere recordings of classic Korngold scores in superlative performances Outside of a couple of very small details there are none

Cult - Apocalyptica
Talented and dynamic cello metal. You do tend to wish there was a real guitar in there somewhere.

Black Earth - Arch Enemy
The logical and loyal successor to Carcass. Structurally flawed.
