Gemini is the eightht album from Brian McKnight and was released in 2005. Gemini features contributions from the likes of Akon, Juvenile, Skip and also Talib Kweli. The album was released on the famous Motown label and is one of McKnight's strongest albums to date even though the record sales might not show it. The lead single on the album is Everytime You Go Away.
1.) I Stay with him (intro)
This is a very pleasant intro to the album which showcases the vocals of Brian McKnight and the vocal harmonies of the backing vocalists. A nice start to the album.
2.) What we do here
This opens slowly and then with the beat it gets into full swing, The track is about a discreet relationship which you don't want people knowing about. A very smooth track.
3.) Everytime You Go Away
This is about a relationship where you love every moment you spend with your partner and when it's just not the same when you arent with them. A great track which is the first great ballad on Gemini.
4.) Grown Man Business
This is a catchy uptempo track about the difference between a grown man and a young man who thinks he is man enough already. I like the guitars and bass in this track as they are catchy throught.
5.) Everything I Do
This is a great ballad which starts off with a gentle piano piece and then opens into a superb track which shows the great falsetto vocals which Brian McKnight is known for. A great ballad about doing things for your partner.
6.) Here With You
This is another great ballad, The subtle bass hooks and guitar licks make this song all the more seductive. One of the best tracks on the album and a showcase for his mellow vocals.
7.) All Over Now
This is the first real hip hop tinged track on the album, A thumping beat is accompanied by some funky keyboard hooks and some smooth vocals. A very good track which has a great flow.
8.) She Feat.Talib Kweli
This is another funky hip hop track which has a great feel. His vocals are smooth and relaxed despite the beat which makes a nice change. Talib Kweli adds a decent touch to the song.
This is a really good track which has a great laidback feel with some nice strings and soft keyboard tones. Brian's Vocals sound good as usual and this is one of the best ballads on the album.
10.) Come Back To Me
This is a really good track which has an old 70's soul feel which is interestingly joined by up to date hip hop style beats and a very nice string background which adds a great touch to the overall feel.
11.) Watcha Gonna Do? Feat. Akon, Juvenile and Skip
The thing I love about this hip hop track is that it is a truly great tester for a hi-fi and I like music that is recorded well. The punchy beat of the bass needs to be reproduced well as does the biting bass hook. If your hi-fi setup gets these things right then start toe tapping as this track comes in with THAT Bassline.
12.) Your Song
Moving things back to the ballads now and this is a truly superb ballad which has a beautifully smooth feel with elements of soul and jazz. One of the best slow tracks he has done in recent years.
13.) Me & You
Another slow track and this time it's an epic track of longing and this has a very religious feel which I don't usually like but this makes for a good song due to the vocal delivery and lyrics like "So it pleased them all to bruise Him
They beat Him in ways you never heard
And they kicked Him and they spit on Him
And He never said a mumblin word
But Lord forgive them, Lord forgive them
For they know not what they do
And they nailed Him to the cross
And He died for me and you"
This is not his best album but is a very very decent effort which has some great songs and there is not a bad track in sight on Gemini. When he retires this album will be considered one of his best albums. A great album.
