Advantages: wonderful, beautiful, powerful
Disadvantages: occasionally trying to rhyme spoils the lyrical quality
It is very seldom that you come across a band who completely blow you away the first time you hear them, but for me Cyclefly are definately one of these rare gems. I first experienced Cyclefly supporting Bush at the Manchester Academy early in 2000, and they put the headliners to shame, both with the raw live quality of their music, and their on-stage antics; with the highlight being vocalist Declan O'Shea clad in neon pvc climbing and diving from the huge speakers. Acrobatics aside, Cyclefly are an extremely talented band, whose music is an eclectic mixture of punk, rock, grunge and to some extent pop, all with edgy undertones; this is a band who are very much alternative. Their sound is unique, but can perhaps be best described as a combination of the best aspects of nine inch nails, placebo, marilyn manson, smashing pumpkins and rachel stamp. Generation Sap (Cyclefly's debut album) is a spectacular rollercoaster of emotion; sadness, hate and regret, with underlying tones of tenderness. The general formula appears to be beautiful melodies interspersed with big riffs and anthemic choruses, although no two songs on the album are completely alike and there are no obvious 'album fillers'. For me the highlights of this album are; Crawl down; a hatred fuelled anthem, filled with violent imagery, it's simplicity is it's power, with it's strong riffs and beat fuelling this hurricane of a track. Supergod; This track is filled with stark contrasts between quiet melody and screaching effects, this combined with O'Shea's sweet, rasping tones, which are at intervals spat out with venom, create another brilliant track. Whore; This is undoubtedly the most beautiful song on the album, and is of a different tone to the other tracks. Whore brings a feeling of contemplative serenity and sadness, and is a very powerful and emotion envoking track. The vocals remain sweet and melodic throughout, backed by
soft accoustic guitars, which climax with a crescendo of drums, strings, vocals and guitars, making the song all the more powerful; simply beautiful. Plastic coated man; This song resonates through you as it plays, and sends shivers down your spine. with sharp, powerful verses interspersed with anthemic choruses, this is an amazing track filled with intensity and strength. Generation sap is an amazing album, with a track to suit almost every mood. Every song is of a very high standard, both musically and lyrically. I whole heartedly recommend Generation sap, and hope that Cyclefly will obtain the rewards and recognition they deserve for their work. This is alternative music at it's best.
