I can't add anything to Pingu's excellent crit of Gershwin (even though he doesn't mention his lovely wife, Ira) except that I feel he hasn't given Porgy and Bess a fair chance. This opera has some of the best songs that came out of the USA in that phenomenal decade, the 30's. Without being able to give a reason, I think "Bess You Is My Woman Now" is THE most fabulous tune and who can fail to love "Summertime" (especially when sung by my wife!). Barbra Streisand decided against (it seems) all advice to include "Bess" and (I'm a little unsure of the exact title) "Don't let him handle me" ... Read the complete review

Feeling he ought to have had formal tuition, Gershwin once approached Ravel asking for composition lessons. Ravel asked what kind of money he was making, and suggested the tuition should be the other way around. Although slightly flippant, this gives some indication of Gershwin's huge popularity. His music has seeped into Western culture in such a way that almost everyone is familiar with at least snatches of it. Despite this Gershwin comes in for a lot of flack from all sides.
