Advantages: Very cool music, influenced by some of the bands in history!
Disadvantages: erm.....
Im sure Jet get fed up with being constantly compared to other bands by every critic around, especially the NME! But the bands to which they are compared are of such class that, maybe it isnt just a comparison, but a very high accalaide? It is hard writing about them without doing so in terms of how their music is influenced by such artists as the Stones, AC/DC, pink floyd and the like. The 4 piece from Melbourne, consisting of Nic Cester (vocals/guitar), Cameron Muncey (guitar), Chris Cester (drums), Mark Wilson (bass), encompass all that is, and was, rock and roll. this is the band The Darkness could have been, had they not turned out to be shite. So, its left up to the aussies again, and like AC/DC before them, they really do rock. (except none of jet dress up as weird looking school boys) This album really is a brilliant record. It replaced The Strokes, room on fire, in my cd player a couple of weeks ago, and has stayed there since. Get Born starts where 40 licks left off, with a stone-esque rock song, 'last chance'. As youd expect, theres lots of guitar, lots of drum, lots of bass, and generally, lots of excellent music. Its pretty short at just shy of 1:50, but it sets the mood perfectly. Next up are my 2 favourite songs from the album, 'are you gonna be my girl' and 'rollover D.J'. 'Are you...' is just an awesome song. it has the catchiest guitar riffs ive heard in such a long time, and the vocals are just so synonymous with Jets funky/rock and roll sound. It starts with a Liam Gallagher type tomborine solo, then the hard stuff kicks in...'1,2,3 take my hand and come with me, cos you look so fine that i really wanna make you mine'....'4,5,6 come on and get your kicks, cos you dont need money when ya look like that do ya honey' This is such a catchy song, and i cant stop listening to it! help! Rollover DJ is much in the same mould, with very awesome guitar, but th
is has a much more classic rock sound. Im sure most of you have heard it, its being played a lot at the moment, and is the 2nd single from the album (Are you gonna be my girl? being the 1st). Rollover DJ is what the title suggests, nic having a go at djs. 'i wanna move but it dont feel right, cos youve been playing other peoples songs all night'...'i know that you think youre a star, a pill-poppin jukebox is all that you are'. The awesome guitar riffs, and heavy drums make this such a classic track. The upbeat feeling of the record is puncuated briefly by the mellow 'look what youve done'. not, as you may think, a cover of the stones version, but a beatle-esque ballad, in which the guitar is replaced for piano. This isnt my favourite song from the album, as the repetition of lyrics towards the end can get a bit tedious, but nevertheless, its a great song, if off the beaten track. 'Move on' has a very Pink Floyd 'wish you were here' feel to it. its a beautiful song, and the great vocal coupled with the acoustic guitar, and harmonica make this a very reflective song. 'Im gonna have to move on, before we meet again' The diversity in this album is really highlighted by this song, subsequent 'Radio song', and later 'come around again', which also wouldnt look out of place on 'Echoes'. Theyre rock and roll, but much more sombre than the opening tracks, and contrast them perfectly, with their very contemplative lyrics. 'Cold hard bitch' is back to form, and another brilliant song from the album. you cant help noticing the influences again but, as with the rest of this album, theyve made each song their own. Some more hard rocking guitar is the order of the day. Strong vocals make this a sing/shout along song if ever there was one. 'Cold hard bitch, just a kiss on the lips, and i was on my knees, im waiting, give me.' 'Take it or leave it&
#39; definately has a more modern feel to it, and it reminded me a lot of The Hives, with very fast guitar, and fast vocals. Its a great song to put towards the end of the album, and perks it up nicely before the wonderful closing 'timothy'. Overall this album is a great mix of slower ballads, and the very upbeat rock songs. Jet are something different in a sea of modern rock bands, which the NME cant wait to kiss on the arse. Their influences make this album accessible to older generations, aswell as us young indie/rock lovers. Ive gotta say that Get Born has to be the best release of 2003 so far, surpassing The Strokes room on fire, and The Libertines up the bracket. Jet have been touring recently with friends, and fellow throwbacks, Kings of Leon. i sooo would have loved to have caught one of these gigs, but as it is, ill have to stick to the album, ahhhhh *reflective sigh*. Anyway, you should definately check it out!! Cheers, Andy.
