...Introduction...

For those of you who havent heard of Van Zant they are Donnie and Johnny Van Zant and are brothers of Ronnie Van Zant who was the lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd before he tragically died in a plane crash while the band were on tour in 1977. Johnny became the vocalist of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1987 and the two brothers have been recording as Van Zant since 1984.

Johnny - Johnny is the younger of the two and is 49 years old, He is the singer of the duo and is the current singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Johnny is a very good singer who has the range to sing full on rock songs and slower country rock ballads.

Donny - Donny is 52 years old and is the lead guitarist of Van Zant but he also shares some of the singing duties with his younger brother Johnny who is the lead singer. Donny is a very impressive guitarist and isnt a bad singer either.

...Album Review...

1. Takin' Up Space

This starts the album off with a brilliant rock track which brims full of attitude. It starts off with what sounds like a Didgeridoo. The track is about when you just want people to get lost and about feeling confident in yourself against others. There's some great guitar parts in this track with some great drumming that adds something else to the track.

2. Nobody Gonna Tell Me What To Do

This is another very good track, it starts with a nice mellow guitar intro and then develops into a track with attitude basically telling people that they are not going to just do what you want them to do. A great message about staying positive in yourself and not listening to the negative things people say about you.

3. Sweet Mama

The track starts with a guitar with pedal effects. This is a catchy track that doesnt have the feel that some of the other tracks on the album have but it is still a very good track. Just doesnt have that spark that sets them apart. Good solo though.

4. Help Somebody

This is a fantastic ballad about their grandparents. It is a really emotive track about how they can give you great advice and their words stick with you forever. A wonderful track that just has a great flow. Brilliant.

5. Things I Miss The Most

This starts off with soft guitar and then the voice comes in, a fantastic slow song which is a very biographical song. The vocals have a great flow to them and this is a very good track with some gentle music accompanying their southern country rock vocals.

6. I Know My History

This is a great rockin' track that sounds great for radio and concerts and is one of the best of the middle bunch of tracks on the album. One that is very good but not quite as good as the best but better than just good if you catch my drift.

7. I Can't Help Myself

This is a lovely slow ballad which has a nice country feel. Johnny's voice has a nice Country rock twang on the track and this is one of the best slower tracks I have heard from Van Zant. A really good gentle track which is really well done.

8. I'm Doin' Alright

This is a rockier track than the previous track and has a great catchy feel that pictures the scene of this track being performed in a bar in the deep south with the locals dancing around. The biggest top tapper potential on the album. great guitar solo too.

9. Lovin' You

Another toe tapper, this time with a stupendously catchy bass guitar riff. The electric guitar also cries out. This just has such a catchy melody. Brilliant music and chorus. A superbly crafted Country Rock track with bite.

10. Plain Jane

This was written a few years before the album was recorded in 2006 and Although by no means a bad track is probably the weakest track on the album. Still good though.

11. Been There Done That

Here we come to the final track on the album and it is one of the best. The track starts with a banjo and a thumping drum beat. the banjo works really well and then the bass guitar comes in. This shows how catchy their music is. A great melody.

...Overalll...

This is a really good album and is a must for anyone who is a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Or just people who want to take a chance on this album. This album shows the talent the brothers have and is one of my favourite new discoveries. I wasnt aware of the duo as a band until quite recently. Look out for Donnie's new stuff with Lynyrd Skynyrd (yes they are still around together) and Johnny's band 38 special.

Summary: Great album in many areas.
