... tracks like 'Solid' and 'Hold On'. The fifth track 'All I Want' is a mellow number and shows that Gary can sing without the famous rough tones. There's a lot of good guitar work from Kenywn on 'Getaway' and he's mixed his styles up well with some heavy rock on 'Saturday' and classical/jazz type on 'Levels'. The final track 'Do not know what they will do' is very raw and probably the closest to any earlier reef songs. A very good album although may disa...more

Premium Review Getaway - Reef: Reef - Getaway (244 words)
by - written on 08/09/00 (Very useful, 24 readings)
Rating:

The fourth album from possibly one of the funkiest bands to grace the world in recent yearsis, some may say the best yet. immediately we are thrown into the first release, 'Set The Record Straight' which sets the tone for rest of the album. no more poncing around with any tracks like 'Replenish' from the album with the same name, this album is pure rock. the second track is the shortest on the album but possibly the best, with Kenwyn House ripping into a superfast riff that is repeated throughout the track. next up is the title track getaway which cannot possibly fail to get your foot tapping with a truly singalong chorus. Up to track four the songs are a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Worth a purchase (196 words)

Rating:

I bought the new Reef album a few days after release and I wasn't sure what to expect. Having bought Rides and liked it I wasn't sure what they would do next. What they have done is, made the music more commercially acceptable but without losing too much of the edge that was present in their early stuff, like Place your Hands etc. The CD starts with the single 'Set the Record Straight' which is quite good but there are better tracks on the album. Track 2, Superhero, is one of them and so is the title track. They have also thrown in a ballad-type number in All I Want which is excellent. This is the best album I have if you want to cheer ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Getaway - Reef: West Country Boy! (167 words)

Rating:

This is the excellent fourth album from the rockers from the West Country, Reef are a brilliant band and this album is just a little bit more grown up than the "place your hands" days, (well, almost). It is, I have to admit very similar to their previous albums and theres nothing too groundbreaking, but if you like Reef then you will like this album. They have found a good thing and are sticking to it. You can here a lot of other music in some of the songs, like the who and the rolling stones, but I suppose it makes a change from people copying the Beatles(mentioning no names!) "Getaway" is a fantastic song that really gets ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Reef up and Away (146 words)

Rating:

Getaway is Reef's fourth album and includes the top ten hit 'Set the Record Straight'. 'Getaway' is not like any other reef album; its production is much tighter and far more pop based. This has benefits but may equally disappoint fans. There are the trademark riffs on tracks like 'Solid' and 'Hold On'.
