it is clear from this album that the seeds of his strange genius were developing fast. The title track is a kind of muted funk jam, with Prince singing "I can t understand all the things people say/Controversy/Am I black or white? Am I straight or gay?" and ending up with the spoken word chant "People call me rude/I wish we all were nude/I wish there was no black and white/I wish there were no rules". Dirty Mind - Prince

Dirty Mind is a very dirty album. Prince goes overboard singing about absolutely anything sexual he can think of. The title track is a corker and sets the album off nicely, sort of lulling you into a false sense of security before he hits you with the really disgusting stuff. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the lyrical content of these songs, most of the time it seems to be with such humour that it really couldn't offend, but I think you should be aware before buying. I got a dirty mind" he sings on the title track, a good song to start the album. Filth aside, there is plenty of darn good music here. Prince is an artist who stays true to himself, and although now in his mature years he has converted to the Jehovah s Witness faith and will not sing about the sexual subject matter of his younger days, with Dirty Mind he is giving full expression to the wild, lustful thoughts of his young, adulthood, letting the lyrics wander off into a forbidden fantasy land as befits such a male. Albeit absolutely disgusting, Head is a funky masterpiece with a long Dr Fink keyboard solo that makes me reach for this album every now and then. ...
