Advantages: Diverse, half acoustic, half electric
Disadvantages: A bit dated
I believe that this was the first EP released by Guns 'n' Roses and came out before their classic debut album, Appetite For Destruction. Of course, Guns 'n' Roses new album, Chinese Democracy is officialy released next week and I'm sure we're going to see another classick rock group hit number one in the UK album charts! I'm also sure that the release of Chinese Democracy is going to boost sales in these older releases.
The cover of the G'n'R Lies EP is quite entertaining, made up of a series of stories in the format of a newspaper. I think they saw this as more of a joke than anything, as they claim about one of their track that features, Used To Love Her. This EP really is a diverse mixture of what Guns n Roses are all about. The first four tracks are in classic heavy distorted Guns style, while the remaining four tracks are all performed and recorded acoustically.
Reckless Life kicks the EP off with the typical Guns n Roses sound that we all know and have come to love, made up of killer distorted guitar riffs and Axl's screechy vocals before moving on to Nice Boys which seems to have more of a classic rock 'n' roll style to it, except with distortion! The next track is the well known and amazingly catchy Move To The City which contains some great catchy swinging lead guitar riffs. The final heavy song on the EP is a cover of Aerosmith's popular hit, Mama Kin.
The transition from a hard hitting rock EP into entertainingly acoustic songs is rather sudden and personally I feel that this is where the EP becomes the most entertaining. The first acoustic song on the EP is the extremely well known and overly popular ballad, Patience. A classic in it's own right, though a little calm and toned down for the usual Guns n Roses way. This is then followed the amusing comedic Used To Love Her, which contains some very amusing lyrics about how Axl used to love his wife but had to bury her in the back yard after killing her, because she drove him so nuts!!
The next track is a classy and characteristic acoustic version of You're Crazy, which features on their debut album, Appetite For Destruction. The original sleazy attitude and aggressive nature of this song makes it rather entertaining as an acoustic piece, which makes it all the more appealing. The Gunners then finish off with a song which I think is probably the best one featured on the EP, One In A Million. This is actually an acoustic song which contains some electric rhythm guitar and the overall effect is quite outstanding. A very enjoyable song indeed.
Although G'n'R Lies is a very distinctive and characteristic EP which shows the diverse nature and range of Guns 'n' Roses it really does only provide a taster of what the band are all about. Or were! Of course, the new Guns n Roses are missing Slash so I doubt that things will ever be quite the same again!
Summary: A great taster of what the Gunners are all about
