Advantages: True Rock., Memories abound.
Disadvantages: Offensive to those who are easilly offended.
Aah, a wander down the lane that we call memory, how nice to see that little changes and some music will always be as exciting and as great to listen to as always. I have to admit it - I loved, I still love and will continue to love Guns 'n' Roses for quite a while to come. Their Rock 'n' Roll lifestyle, the hippy looking guitarist "Slash" and the foul-mouthed Axl Rose (yes, we all know it's an anagram - don't we.....?) on vocals were the epitome of what I thought a great life would be (I've since grown out of that, thank God!) and back in my teens I was something of an avid fan. Lies is one of G'N'R's beter albums - a happy mix of the heavy rock/metal and melodic classics that they are famous for. The tracks: ----------- 1. Reckless Life: ----------------- We begin with a heavy one (glossary of terms - pt 1 - "Heavy" = loud guitar, a kind of shouting rather than singing, think Heavy Metal, you know what I mean) here, loud guitars, lots of shouting and some seriously attractive riffs coming out. This song has something of a rock 'n' roll theme to it - the tale of someone going out of his way for a reckless life - ignoring what he's told and, well, call it "doing it his way" (good ole Frank Sin') 2. Nice Boys: ------------- They don't play Rock and Roll. Another heavy song, massively loud and exciting, huge drumming and a great Axl Rose screaming voice to add a great feel to the song. Content wise - very little imagination (if you like anything that's out at the moment inmagination is obviously not on your agenda anyway so this should suit you fine) has gone into the song lyrics-wise "Nice boys don't play Rock and Roll, I'm not a nice boy and I never was" (Repeat to fade...) Brilliant guitar, brilliantly sung and a song that really stands out on the
album. 3. Mama Kin: ------------ There's crap on every album out there and this is the bad song on here. Slightly more melodic than the previous two, bit more mellow but with some heavier bits to it. Poorly written and not my favourite by a great bounding leap! 4. Move to the City: -------------------- Now this is a return to the half and half type G'N'R tune, melodic, heavy and really hard to pin down in style. I love this song, a great addition to the album and with a lovely story to it. 5. Patience: ------------ If you know anything about Guns 'n' Roses but are not a fan or into them in a big way, there's a couple of songs that you will definitely know of: Sweet Child Of Mine, November Rain (even though it's just from the French and Saunders take-off), Paradise City and Patience. Melodic to the extreme - see, I'm back talking like a rocker again, feeling the urge to stop washing my hair and rip up my jeans.......must........fight......theurges......h ah! Anyway. Very melodic song this. Imagine, if you will, a strumming 12-string guitar and a whistling introduction, think glens and parklands, a happy scene unfoldsd and you could be listening to something by Foster and Allen (I was always suprised when the Accordian failed to kick in, never disappointed). The song is really nice. As a story it is a classic - Axl seems to be away from his girlfriend and is sad, he's missing her and is waiting for the time he'll see her again. Weepy, slightly inapropriate given the rest of the album and a brilliant Guns 'n' Roses' classic. 6. Used to Love Her: -------------------- Now, by the time you've reached this point in the album you'll be ready for just about anything. Whast you're not expecting though is this! Scary song! (To the limit dudes!). The tune is a litt
le similar to Patience one - beginning with mellow strumming (a bit of a curse before this starts but that's G'N'R for you) and you thing "Aaaah, how nice - he used to love her, must be a bit like the last one" NO! He had to kill her I'm afraid. The song goes into descriptive passages about how much he's missing her but has to keep the corpse! Help! (Great song) 7. You?re Crazy: ---------------- If you know your G'N'R you'll know that this is another version of the song off "Appetite for Destruction" words and tune are the same only this one is the mellow version. The song is about, suprisingly enough, someone who's crazy. We get the strumming, the picking out of a melody and the nice version of Axl's voice, swearing is involved and the the story takes shape throughout the song. 8. One in a Million: -------------------- I know I said that Mama Kin was the crap to this album but I've got to add a note of horror at this track's inclusion. I'll go no further because this is constantly skipped on my CD player - not worth the drawing of a stave this one, wish the boys had thought so before penning it! Overall then: ------------- I love Guns 'n' Roses, they really remind me of those growing up full of teen angst and rebellion years. The Lies album is great and really shows the musical ability of this band, they show off a lot of talent here, to be able to do so many different styles in the one 8-track album takes a lot of talent and they keep the Guns 'n' Roses theme running throughout. Don't expect to listen to this album and not be suprised by the content of the songs, they swear, they blaspheme, they vent rage and they address a lot of issues and themes that could maybe be best left alone. They're the rocker's rock band and have a laugh with it.
A great album, very reasonably priced now due to its age and, if you're into a bit of fun and R'n'R/Metal - have a look.

geordieger - 13.06.02 I'm going to have to dig this out of my CD collection, 'cos I've not listened to it in ages, and I love it.
