Mask - Bauhaus

Premium Review Chiselled Slits (333 words)
by Frankingsteins - written on 13/02/08 (Very useful, 27 readings)
Rating:

Although its influence on the gothic rock movement is fairly obvious, 'Mask' strikes me as a slight disappointment after the quality of its more experimental predecessor, falling back on its contemporary David Bowie influence even to the extent of including minimal synthesisers, but unfortunately lacking the brooding atmosphere. This is a more downbeat and gothic affair on the whole, which should make it appeal to fans of the Cure and the Sisters of Mercy, bands that are both quoted/anticipated in 'The Man With X-Ray Eyes' (similar to 'A Forest') and 'The Passion of Lovers' (which follows a rhythm very similar to 'No Time to Cry') respectively. That was one long-winded sentence ...

In The Flat Field - Bauhaus

Premium Review BAUHAUS (157 words)
by jamesbevis2 - written on 23/11/08 (Useful, 4 readings)

sort of thing, Bauhaus s unique style is somewhat different... read on. The group, certainly as far as this record, had a slightly gothic tinge thanks to some dark and mysterious moods, and combined with a relentless vocal assault the album works well as a whole, and it s no surprise they were invited to contribute to the ...

In The Flat Field - Bauhaus

Premium Review Look to Your Crimson Orifice (334 words)
by Frankingsteins - written on 12/02/08 (Very useful, 38 readings)
Rating:

The debut release from Northampton goth pioneers Bauhaus sounded a lot different from my preconceptions, as I d always imagined them as a sort of Sisters of Mercy clone with annoying electro backing. I was pleasantly surprised to be confronted with an intelligent, creative and occasionally eerie album more reminiscent of the stream-of-consciousness style of The Fall with more than a little inspiration from David Bowie s contemporary Berlin period, something that would feature with even greater prominence in later works once Brian Eno was brought into the fold. Peter Murphy s vocals are a stand-out feature of the band, mostly confined to a croon in the style of Jim ...

heavy slightly cheesy in parts

It's U2 , baby! It's a best of, baby !

Kick-started the gothic rock movement (if you consider that a good thing). Repetitive and less original than the previous album.

Strong, inventive and original debut, with innovative guitars and passionate vocals. Songs tend to follow the same build-up/pay-off structure and are often repetitive.
