Advantages: Beginning of Travis
Disadvantages: Maybe Midsummers Night Dreamin could have been replaced by 20. In saying that The Masterplan and Whatever were never released on albums....
After hearing Travis' second album, the much acclaimed 'The Man Who', I bought this album thinking it would be similar. However, their debut album is far more upbeat, with only the ending to the album containing a downbeat mood. The album starts off with the group's customary gig opener, All I Want To Do Is Rock, and this sets the mood for the first four songs. Typical of their other songs, both on this and their follow up album, AIWTDIR has moments of Fran Healey 'screaming' and this release of energy seems to be Healey's way of letting out his frustrations. Following this, U16 Girls and The Line Is Fine are again examples of Travis 'rocking' - a sound not heard on The Man Who - though it is the fourth track on the album which arguably shows Travis at their best as a rock group; Good Day To Die is my personal favourite of the fast, rock songs on this album and closes a wonderful sequence of songs which opens the album. Good Feeling, Midsummer Night's Dreamin and Tied To The Nineties are good songs but it is with I Love You Anyways where the album really takes off again. That song and More Than Us are more typical of music off The Man Who, particularly More Than Us which is Travis at their best. Placed between these two songs is the gig closing Happy and again this is Travis at their best. Ending the album are two songs, Falling Down and Funny Thing, similar in style to As You Are and Luv from The Man Who and it's clear there was a fluent progression from album to album. Definately as good as The Man Who, this album should be bought by anyone who likes Travis, particularly if they believed Blue Flashing Light, the hidden track on The Man Who, was the best track on that album.

- 22/08/00 I think Good Feeling is a very good album, but I would probably rather listen to The Man Who if i had to choose between the two. |
