Advantages: solid dance
Disadvantages: dated
Inner City hit the big time in the late eighties, when their infectious brand of dance music took the UK by storm. Hailing from Detroit, Kevin Sanderson and vocalist Paris Grey notched up an impressive string of top forty hits. They never became massive but managed to keep going for a few years before disbanding. A lot of their older tracks have benefited from remix packages in the past five years, helping to revive interest in the group.
'Good Life' lives up to the title. A wonderful hedonistic dance anthem with depe blusey vocals from Paris and brilliant pianos to drive the song. It is a classic and for many will bring back memories of early clubbing days. On a similar keel, 'Big Fun' delivers more of the same. A rip roaring vocal in which Paris sings about parties and having big fun. Her vocals are full of shine and promise and it is a beast of a house song.
'Ain't Nobody Better' is pretty good fayre too. A house anthem from 1989 which still sounds great. There is an uplifting piano in this and a sultry bassline to pound the heart. Head to 'Do You Love What I Feel' for some true American disco beats. A satisfying piano riff and some brassy instruments, though less instant with the tune than the aforementioned hits.
'Whatcha Gonna Do' is one I return to, more mid tempo with an uber slinky vocal from Paris. It is one to grind to with a loved one and has a sublime soulful twist. If you like this more mid tempo stuff, then 'That Man' is another fiesty number, benefiting from an icy cool vocal and some sexy synths from Sanderson.
My final tip is the delicious 'Pennies From Heaven' which is the kind of song you want to hear at the end of a good night out clubbing. Inspiring lyrical content and a really positive piano. There are messages of happiness and peace flowing from this one.
If you like American house, with soul and passion then check this album out.
Summary: good stuff
