Advantages: Catchy tunes and lyrics
Disadvantages: Heavy swearing and sexual content
'The Good Times' is Afroman's first compilation album, a mix of some of the tracks from his first three albums. Afroman is Joseph Mortimer Foreman, a rapper from Palmdale in Calfornia. He came into the commercial spotlight with his 2001 chart success single, 'Because I Got High', and his music touches themes such as drugs and his hometown of Palmdale.
'The Good Times' compiles 10 tracks performed by the rapper and guitarist, including the hit 'Because I Got High' and another of his released singles 'Crazy Rap'. His music is heavily edited for radio due to swearing and sexual connotations.
These are the tracks:
1. Because I Got High
2. Crazy Rap
3. She Won't Let Me...
4. Hush
5. Tumbleweed
6. Let's All Get Drunk
7. Tall Cane
8. Palmdale
9. Mississippi
10. The American Dream
This album is not for the faint-hearted. There is regular swearing and it talks a hell of a lot about sex and drugs, and not in a subtle way. Lyrically, there is anger and passion, particularly with regard to Palmdale and the drugs lifestyle he raps about.
There is some wonderful harmony mixed in with the vaguely sexist, drug-fuelled rapping. 'Hush' has some wonderful vocals that you can really let go with when singing along! The track entitled 'Palmdale' features Afroman rapping for nearly 7 minutes about his home county, and there are true feelings in all bhis music on this album.
I rate this at 3 stars. There is a musical quality of sorts, but the main thing about this album is that it sounds like it was fun to make, and the tunes are very catchy.
And a final word of warning: this carries a parental advisory due to its explicit content. If you are not ready to be shocked or do not like sexism or strong lyrics regarding sex or drugs, then this is not for you. I liked it, but my wife can't stand it. It stays on my shelf until I'm on my own!!!
The album is currently available on amazon.co.uk for £4.47 new, £1.99 used.
