      Bring back the old sound!

Gothic Kaballah is Therion's 13th album and has drawn in positive reviews since its release 3 years ago, it's often considered to be a benchmark of melodic metal and also shows just how the band Therion have changed over the years. Musically, it's very well written and the band are an extremely tight unit, it just sounds a bit too clean for my liking though, the female vocals of Katarina Lilja (and the other female vocalists are not too different in style) and her sweet delivery of the lyrics make the band sound like Evanescence at times, although the subject material obviously differs with Therion's interest in the occult, religion and the like.

What you can expect throughout this album is relatively high pitched in tune singing, much softer drumming than on previous albums, at times singer Mats Levens lets off a more booming voice as on "The Perennial Sophia" and the best songs make use of a haunting choir, the guitar and flute playing is constantly good throughout with some nice riffs and solos.

I'm off to see Therion in a couple of weeks and I'm hoping they don't play too many songs from this album which is unlikely as they are promoting their more recent one. Whilst this album may be technically perfect and musically it's quite catchy and sounds nice on the ears, I prefer their latest album Sitra Ahra and definitely prefer the band's earliest stuff and this really is the band at their most poppiest.
