Advantages: A fantastically fun and greatly amusing covers record.
Disadvantages: 'Grease' purists may not be too impressed.
Hearing Less Than Jake rock out all the classics from the hit musical 'Grease' is amusing to say the least. Why on earth they chose to cover these eight tracks and turn it into an EP consisting only of covers from 'Grease' I'll never quite know, but I shan't complain anyway as it's thoroughly entertaining to hear the band taking on tracks such as 'Summers Nights' and 'Greased Lightnin', tracks that should never really have been given a Punk injection but were nonetheless. When this EP was first released it had to be quickly discontinued to avoid lawsuits with Paramount Pictures and Universal Music Group, however after several months a deal was reached and it was able to be unleashed upon the world for a second time.
Originally released through No Idea Records back in 1997, 'Greased' is little over fifteen minutes in length and is a short slab of kitsch covers that definitely benefit from the Less Than Jake treatment. It's hard to listen to this music without raising a smile; it is also extremely difficult to take this release as anything but a joke, something which is just as well really as I feel that you'd be very much mistaken if you were to take this music seriously.
If you're familiar with the musical 'Grease' then you'll no doubt recognise all of the tracks present in this EP, and if you happen to be a fan then I suggest you take a listen to this EP and hear Less Than Jake's amusing take on these eight tracks. The lyrics are kept the same, but the music is made very much their own by Less Than Jake and its great to hear them put their own comedic take on these eight tracks here present.
At a price of £10.98 from Amazon, this EP isn't exactly the best value in the world given that it only lasts for a mere fifteen minutes so if you're wishing to give it a go then I'd suggest you surf around for a good deal on it. You're bound to pick it up at a bargain price somewhere and given the amusement that you'll be able to garner from listening to it; it is well worth the investment. Take your serious face off and give 'Greased' a listen, it's nothing ground breaking or particularly musically astute, but it is sure to make you laugh and provide you with a definite fifteen minutes of fun.
